If you’re sound asleep when they say “police”, which wakes you up out of REM sleep, completely disoriented, as you try to understand what was that you heard, flash bangs and gunfire erupts....yeah...his was a completely normal reaction. Unless someone is in imminent danger, these types of raids should never happen and too often result in unintended consequences
For the sheer horror of the event, the gun charges should’ve been dropped too.
Yeah, he’s in violation...the sheriff violated him and especially his gf, yet they get a pass? This isn’t justice.
I’m confused. Are we supposed to riot about this one?

He is black. I have no sympathy for police who die in SWAT raids. Those units were originally formed to deal with a very narrow range of situations and were justified. Now they are used for more mundane arrests and political harassment. They the hammer that has replaced the other tools in the police toolkit and every situation looks like a nail now. Coffee is another guy that could have been arrested outside of his house and any house search deemed necessary could have been made immediately after.
They shot here 10 times... did they hit Coffee at all??
That's the only circumstance I can accept as a reasonable justification for No Knock Warrants/SWAT raids. And they need to be 100% sure that is the circumstance.
BTW, where is the DoJ case for violating his girlfriend's civil rights?

The family is quite the criminal enterprise if the Indian River court case search is anything to go by. And it usually is.
He should have been charged with murder. He armed himself with a firearm, set an ambush inside his home and waited for the cops to break in so he could shoot them. /Sarc
Florida is an open records state. You can do a search on the Indian River County Clerk of Court website and find all the court cases (local) that Cofee and his dad and his grandfather have been involved in. C.F. (criminal felony) is an all too common description of the reason for their court appearances.
Yes Coffee IV had the right to defend himself and I don’t doubt he believed he was being robbed. Criminals are often targets of other criminals. Especially known drug dealers.
But the community will be a lot safer if he is sentenced and made to serve the maximum time for the gun charge.
The reason we need these raids is we have all these SWAT teams armed and trained as a result of the Bush Cheney WOT.
Actually they started in the ‘80s with the justification “they will flush their drugs down the toilet if we don’t get in before they have time to.”
Anyone who can flush all their drugs down a toilet doesn’t have many drugs.
Yep, that really irritates me too. Most of those “wrong addresses” could have been sorted out with a two minute internet search. The info was there all along.
But old fashioned police work like surveillance, to confirm the subject they want actually lives where they think he lives, is what should be done but that was discarded many years ago ... cuz, hard work, dood.

I live in Vero and never remember hearing about this case. I do know that there is a crime ridden and scary part of town called Gifford that is where this happened. I drove through there once and was unwilling to go back.

Local story about the Coffee family. The father was who the warrant was for, but the son, also a convicted felon, was the shooter and will be sentenced for having a firearm.
