While the media declares the notion of ‘climate lockdowns’ to be a fake news “conspiracy theory,” India is preparing to impose a climate lockdown to reduce pollution.

Yes, really.

NPR reports the details of the lockdown under the headline ‘New Delhi’s air pollution is so bad, officials are calling for a citywide lockdown’.

“India’s Supreme Court is calling for a lockdown in the capital, New Delhi. It’s because of a health emergency, but it’s not about COVID-19. It’s about air pollution,” states the piece.

Authorities are set to ban all nonessential travel on roads in the national capital region while ordering tens of millions of people to work from home.

Construction sites are also closing along with schools, many of which only recently opened after the COVID-19 lockdown.

Delhi’s chief minister is also calling on neighboring states to impose similar measures.

Take it a step further and require folks to not breath during the week of lockdown. I mean if you're serious about cutting back on the evil emissions that feed all the plants.

Beijing did something similar in the region around the capital for a month or so prior to the 2008 Summer Olympics. I was there a couple weeks before the games and the difference was startling. The sky was no longer canary yellow, my eyes didn’t burn after walking outside, the streets were clean, no beggars from the countryside anywhere, and all the taxi drivers were wearing brand new matching shirts. Sort of the Berlin ‘36 model redux.

This has nothing to do with climate change. There are few emissions controls in India. The cities can develop killer smogs like London did in the 50s.

And 60’s. We were living there in 61-63 outside of London and used coal to heat the house. We had a week or so of freezing fog one winter and with all the soot mixed in, it was really nasty.

Another reason for the increased winter pollution is just simple geography

Delhi is located in a region where the winter weather often causes inversions of cold air trapped at ground level with warmer air on top. Slower seasonal wind speeds means the inversion can last for a significant period of time. Pollution rates in the summer are not as bad as the winter because warmer temperatures cause weather patters to change as well. However, it is convenient for the government to claim climate change so that it can impose population control measures.

The despicable thing is the lockdown will cause untold suffering among the poorest of the poor who will be unable to go to their day labor jobs and then not have enough money to buy food.

That’s air pollution not climate change. It might be appropriate to reduce exhaust emissions by restricting the use of automobiles. They will have to figure out how to make their cars the way we do except for the catalytic converters which would only get stolen.

Yesterday’s “conspiracy theory,” today’s “mandate.” That being said, it sounds like New Delhi has *real* air pollution, not the grant money addled Algore/Greta CO2 paranoia. *Genuine* killer smog can be cleared up, as Pittsburg and London proved.
