CVS Pharmacy announced on Thursday that it would close roughly 900 stores in the next three years.
The company said in a statement it was "evaluating changes in population, consumer buying patterns and future health needs to ensure it has the right kinds of stores in the right locations for consumers and for the business."
"We remain focused on the competitive advantage provided by our presence in thousands of communities across the country, which complements our rapidly expanding digital presence," CEO Karen S. Lynch said in the statement.

Drugstores have been overbuilt for a long time, the big grocery chains have hurt them badly with their pricing ability and one-stop convenience.

I sometimes see Walgreens and CVS blocks apart. I also suspect CVS over-expanded since I can find three of them within a 3 minute drive.

There are about 10,000 (9967) CVS outlets in 27 states. This represents about 9% of all their stores.
You’re right....Life has changed. We have 2 stores and Walmart and Target are close by. Very little use for the drug store.
Not sure of their current status, but CVS and other drug stores insisted on a mask last year. Perhaps there was no way around it, but now when I need a birthday card or OTC medicine I can pick it up at the grocery store.
I have to believe that part of this is because they’ve driven some customers away.
This is all about eliminating legalized shoplifting, armed robberies, and assaults on employees.

Our little town has both a Walgreens and a CVS and you are right, they are only a block apart.
CVS has failed. Good riddance.
The one time drug stores have their use is when you need a prescription filled in the middle of the night due to an urgent care or hospital emergency visit. Walmart and Target generally close down their pharmacies early in the evening.
