H2O: What You Need To Know
American Council on Science and Health ^ | 11/09/21 | Susan Goldhaber MPH

The EWG wrote their own in those cases where the EPA did not have a standard for a contaminant. The EWG wrote their own standards for several contaminants already regulated by the EPA, with most about a 100-fold lower than EPA’s standard. For example, the EPA standard for a group of disinfection by-products (trihalomethanes) is 80 parts per billion (ppb); the EWG’s 0.15 ppb. Total trihalomethanes were detected at 28.3 ppb in my drinking water supply, so it complied with EPA’s regulations but exceeded the EWG’s. Anyone can make a standard look bad by writing a lower one.

Has contamination really increased, or is it just that they can now measure incredibly tiny amounts of these substances? Think parts per billion.

Should I be concerned about Dihydrogen Monoxide?

Yes, you should be concerned about DHMO! Although the U.S. Government and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) do not classify Dihydrogen Monoxide as a toxic or carcinogenic substance (as it does with better known chemicals such as hydrochloric acid and benzene), DHMO is a constituent of many known toxic substances, diseases and disease-causing agents, environmental hazards and can even be lethal to humans in quantities as small as a thimbleful.

Nitrates in my area come out of the tap at 20 ppm per my aquarium test strips. My poor single common goldfish is used to a tank with 20-40 ppm, unfortunately.

Thanks for not defining any acronyms.

Of course, H2O is water.

EPA is Environmental “Protection” Agency.

EWG is Edgar Winter Group.

The common water filter used in most refrigerators will reduce many of the EWG toxins to close to their “acceptable” levels.

A reverse osmosis system, commonly used in West Texas to remove mineral taste, will clean city water to almost distilled water levels. Which it basically is what it becomes.

Many of their limits are measured in parts per trillion. In many cases that is down within the margins of error, close to zero.

Water will eventually dissolve almost anything, and the great oceans are the ultimate sink that everything drains into.

Interesting? Yes, but not something that I will go out and spend all my money to ameliorate.

We have bigger health issues to fry.

Dihydrogen Monoxide on its own merit is deadly.

Many thousands of people around the world die from it each year.

The MSDS for Dihydrogen Monoxide is eye opening.

Is is deadly as a liquid, solid and a gas.

Soon you'll find these stickers on all water faucets, shower heads, pots, pans, drinking glasses, and coffee cups.

DiHydrogen Monoxide can kill you, and it is found in all municipal drinking water supplies. You can try to neutralize with the base Hydrogen Hydroxide, but inhaling even small amounts of that can cause death as well.

Maintain adequate awareness around hydroxic acid too.

From the article. “The source of this report, a drinking water database by the Environmental Working Group (EWG). The article says that regulators have identified 56 new contaminants in drinking water, with many causing dangerous health problems such as cancer, reproductive disruption, and liver disease.”

So, not only small amounts, but more to choose from.
