TECH Apple is sticking taxpayers with part of the bill for rollout of tech giant’s digital ID card

Apple is making U.S. states foot part of the bill and provide customer support for its plan to turn iPhones into digital identification cards, according to confidential documents obtained by CNBC.

The company requires states to maintain the systems needed to issue and service credentials, hire project managers to respond to Apple inquiries, prominently market the new feature and push for its adoption with other government agencies, all at taxpayer expense, according to contracts signed by four states.

Apple announced in June that its users could soon store state-issued identification cards in the iPhone’s Wallet app, billing it as a more secure and convenient way for customers to provide credentials in a variety of in-person and remote setting...

...But the move has brought questions from industry observers about why local authorities are ceding control of citizens’ identities to a $2.46 trillion private corporation....

lots of things look good on paper within a moral, polite society. But we don't have a moral or polite society any more.
Here are the states who have allegedly signed contracts - Do the governors know? Arizona, Georgia, Kentucky and Oklahoma

Not sure I see this as a problem. If states want to use the iPhone for a valid ID, the states pay the costs. Why would Apple pay the costs?

Well, duh. Any business with half a brain has to to pass on their costs - that’s how they arrive at the price for their product.

Dang, man, Free Enterprise. Remember that?

The only thing wrong with the scenario is government meddling in the marketplace. A private business that profits from government is maximizing their profit - exactly what a business should do. But the government’s involvement is usually corrupt and involves bribery and interference with the marketplace.

The bad guy as is always the case, is not “Big Tech” but BIG GOVERNMENT.

As long as the Right is confused about that, Left has them hook, lines, and sinker.

I’m guessing you don’t understand that iPhone owners would have to individually decide to put their “digital identification” into their “wallet” and then take action to actually do that? Otherwise, it won’t be in the wallet.

This will be a feature that people can use or not use. Me? I probably will do it solely for the purpose of having ID available on me on the rare occasions I forget my wallet.

That’s the state’s decision to agree to those terms.

I have an iPhone and would never put a legal ID on it.

When have we ever had a moral and polite society to your satisfaction? The good old days? Moral and polite begins with God and is directed in various ways. Anonymity is not much in favor of moral and polite. “Where are you?”

Absolutely. Define how the data can get in there, how someone can ask for it, etc. and then let whoever wants to use it, do the implementation (and all the hookups to the various backends) for their "item". Pretty standard stuff.

So glad you explained that.

Not--bwahahahahahaha!

No way I am giving them the tools to track me--and then "opting out".

Yeah--the NSA, Big Tech, organized crime, hackers will never use it to track people....

I have some great swampland on Mars for a million bucks an acre--great stuff--promise!

sure, but considering the retail price of an iphone, ($1200 now?) the cost of maintenance, etc of a dedicated and proprietary application, should be absorbed by the vendor, same as any other apple ap in their store. Either as a CODB overhead or as a nominal subscription for the convenience, not the state. And, if you talk the state into setting up their own little squad just for apple users, it might give unionized hourly employees who can’t be fired and tend to be liberal, ideas of their own for their own little data squads. The less the state is involved the better.
