Defence Minister Peter Dutton says Australia will help defend Taiwan against China if war breaks out and our allies are forced to act - as he revealed why France was kept in the dark about the ditched $90billion submarine deal.
Celebrating 20 years in parliament, Mr Dutton acknowledged China's status as an economic and military superpower but said backing the US to protect Taiwan was vital to leave Australia in a global position of strength.
'(China's) been very clear about their intent to go into Taiwan and we need to make sure that there is a high level of preparedness, a greater sense of deterrence by our capability, and that is how I think we put our country in a position of strength,' he told The Australian.
'It would be inconceivable that we wouldn't support the US in an action if the US chose to take that action.'
.....
On the topic of the dumped $90billion French submarine deal, Mr Dutton was adamant its rejection at the eleventh hour was necessary.
'If you had have informed the French earlier and they had have made that public and not respected the advice that we had given them, the Americans probably would have pulled out of the deal with the violent reaction from the French,' he said.

How?
Have you read more than just the headline?
As long as the Taiwanese get vaxxed and wear their masks.
The Aussie elites are beta testing their future Chinese occupation.
It looks like most Aussies will be obedient slaves to their new masters.
Why? People do that? Is that a thing? The FReepers that I know shoot from the hip. They come out keystrokes blazing on half the information.
No, they won’t.
The Australians say they’ll do it if we do, but our policy is to not say if we will or not to keep the Chinese guessing and not piss them off too much.
Unfortunately, you seem to be swallowing the propaganda China is feeding Americans about what is going on in Australia.
It annoys me.
The article is quite clear in what is being talked about - Australia supporting any action the United States takes. Nobody is under any illusion, Australia could defend Taiwan by ourselves. The assumption is America would take the lead - but it is important for other nations to make it clear whose side they’d be on in such a conflict and that is what Dutton is doing here.
Again, have you read the article - or just the headline?
I understand different states in Australia are different bla bla bla, but I also understand there are some clinically insane regional governments that still treating their citizens like cattle.

1. Adding more submarines, exceptionally powerful ones. Subs are a big deal in the naval balance. One can effectively threaten an enemies trade and impose unacceptable costs. This was a tried and true strategy going back to antiquity.
2. Australia does have an air force. 120+ modern combat aircraft (F18/F35) that, in the case of a war vs China, are mostly unnecessary for air defense as only a few Chinese aircraft have the range to hit Australia. They can therefore be redeployed to Taiwan if necessary. They would make a very significant addition to Taiwanese defense.
3. Secure (mostly) basing for US air and naval forces within easy ferry range of Taiwan.
Do you know what that photo actually shows?
Rather than what you’ve probably told it shows?
Only if the the Chicoms come to Australia (I’m sure the Aussie military is quarantined) and wear masks when they attack.
To defend Taiwan, we need the US, Japan, India and Australia.
Everything I've heard about what's going on in Australia has come from the Australian media so I guess you're saying that the Australian media is controlled by China.
A lot of it, basically is. It's mostly in the hands of the hard left and they are strongly influenced by the Chinese agenda.
But for the most part, Australian media has been a bit more accurate on this stuff than US media. I follow both and the number of outright lies I've seen in the US media about Australia recently has been astonishing. Claims we've been under martial law, as one example - utter crap. But Americans have been fed it, and way too many seem to accept it as true.
