A good number of the ships off California coast waiting to be unloaded are larger than NeoPanmax they are too large to fit even the new locks of the Panama Canal. So it’s a month of additional sea time and around the horn of south America through very big seas that can and does routinely sink large vessels. For the ones smaller than NeoPanmax the fees to transit the locks are measured in the millions of American dollars and there is a backlog of.vessels waiting to transit the canal as it is right now. Then even if those ships could get to the Gulf Coast Houston nor.New Orleans or Corpus Christi have the cranes or deep enough drafts to take post panmax vessels. Mexico has two deep.water ports on the Pacific Ocean side both can take post panmax but since Mexico fell to a full on narco republic the theft rates and bribes are discouraging using those ports. The U.S.government needs to nationalize the ports of L.A., just the unions and use national guard if needed to run the ports and/or.bring in non union crane ops. Run then 24/7 and then void California CARB air regs while.nationalized to allow every class 8 from anywhere at anytime to grab containers. Doing that will solve the issue in a few months time. The Gulf Coast is not set up for these ships and likely never will be.

For our battalion tac evaluation, I put together an imaginative resupply operation that included getting food from local merchants. While giving my briefing, the Chief Evaluator was growing incredulous, to put it mildly.
While my Battalion Commander was thoroughly enjoying the show, the Chief Evaluator, also a LT Colonel, asked me “where did you get this crap?” I replied it came from being in the battalion for 4 years, and getting to know merchants in the local community. I suggested we take the time to visit a couple, including a gasthaus I frequented often.
At that point, one of our battery commanders, interrupted and told him, “you don’t want to do that. He’s going to take you to the gasthaus where he’s been dining at the stammtisch for at least the past six months.”
Checkmate: the stammtisch is a table reserved for family, and close friends of the family. It was a rarity for an American to sit at a stammtisch, an honor I have cherished for 40+ years. How I earned that arose from my advocacy for Ronald Reagan in 1980, in that gasthaus in the weeks leading to the election...and totally in German. You see, my neighbors pleaded with me to vote for Carter, as they were sure Reagan would start WW3.
I’d be willing to bet that I was more qualified to be the Ambassador to Germany, too...lol.
