Washington scientist admits to fabricating steel-strength results for US Navy subs for over 30 years: Took 'shortcuts' because she thought safety test criteria was 'stupid'

A Washington state scientist who specializes in steel and other metals who was once employed by a foundry that provides steel for U.S. Navy submarines admitted in federal court Monday that she spent decades faking strength test results, calling the criteria for the safety tests 'stupid.'

Washington metallurgist Elaine Marie Thomas, 67, of Auburn, falsified results over the course of 32 years while the woman was employed at a steel foundry in Tacoma, according to prosecutors.

The company that owns the foundry, Bradken Inc., is the U.S. Navy's leading supplier of steel for naval submarines.

'She regrets that she failed to follow her moral compass - admitting to false statements is hardly how she envisioned living out her retirement years,' Thomas' lawyer, John Carpenter, said, acknowledging that she 'took shortcuts.'

Was she discovered because of structural problems? If not maybe she was right about the validity of the tests.

Send her to 10 fathoms beyond maximum dive depth in one of the subs she “certified” the steel for. Let her spend a few weeks down there, and see if she still thinks the criteria for strength testing are “stupid”. The Navy is the designated “research” branch for the armed services, and is generally pretty accurate in the testing criteria it specifies for critical equipment components like submarine hulls.

What pisses me off the most about this is that it wasn’t until year 32 that it was found out.

I can foresee someone to knucklehead really important studies. But it seems the company itself found out about the problem before the Navy even investigated it!

Do they even double check these projects?

Hi.

Seems like this type of sabatage keeps happening.

Just last month it was a Navy contractor and his Trump hating wife.

The Walkers, Hansen and others have done great damage to the Navy.

Among others.

Knock her out and put her in one of those trainers where they simulate leaks.

Wake her up.

Tell her they’re taking her out on a short run in a sub.

Start popping the leaks.

See how she likes it.

Thats the real question isn’t it? Did anything fail that she said wouldn’t? I don’t know the answer, but it is entirely possible that she was actually right.

You can’t question her she’s a scientist and scientists never lie.

The Justice Department said it would recommend a prison term for Thomas at the low end of her suggested sentence - which could see the 67-year-old scientist behind bars until 2032.

Ms. Thomas must be a Democrat. Think of what the recommendation would be if she was a republican.

She should face the death penalty. Thats is beyond fraud. Sailors sailing in those subs for decades face death because of her deliberate decision. Execute her.

Utterly inexcusable.
