The Roman Empire exceeded America in several ways and was an awesome force in the world. Its fall was gradual but spectacular. Some of the reasons for its fate included (1) overspending (2) corrupt and bloated and apathetic government (3) incompetent military leaders - picked by aristocracy and not by merit (4) hostile public sick of rulers insane decrees and indifferent to an outside force taking over. One huge problem the Empire had was that it never adequately solved the Imperial succession problem. This left it constantly vulnerable to strength and morale sapping destructive civil wars over who should rule next. Even the Eastern Empire had that problem.
That describes most any empire in history. 21 of the 22 world empires collapsed from corruption within rather than conquerors.
