Edwin Durr, a Republican candidate for president of the New Jersey Senate, is inching ahead of incumbent Stephen Sweeney (D) as of Wednesday morning, according to NJ.com.
In 2017, Sweeney managed to win reelection against a powerful Republican challenger, Fran Grenier; together, the two sides spent more than $24 million in the race. The New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission reported that the election may have been "the most expensive legislative race in U.S. history."
Durr, in contrast, claims that he has spent just $153.00 on his campaign, NJ.com reported.
Durr's campaign focused on "limiting government, reducing taxes, and fixing the state's roads," according to NJ.com. His platform was not paid too much attention this election season, however.
His website initially led to many error codes, NJ.com reported, and those outside of South Jersey largely had not heard of him before Tuesday.
Durr previously ran and lost a race for the state assembly in 2019. He has not once held elected office, according to NJ.com. He has lived in New Jersey all his life and worked as a truck driver for the past 25 years.
NJ.com reported that Durr had compared his campaign challenge to Sweeney to repairing his rusty, old, beaten-down 1964 Mustang that sits in front of his own yard. “What it requires now is someone to show it a little TLC," Durr said.
Durr built his campaign in a grassroots fashion, going door-to-door in his district and introducing himself to local voters, NJ.com reported. Sweeney, in contrast, has long been a fixture in Trenton.

PATRIOT PING
Wow! I hope Durr is able to prevail.
C’mon Edwin. You are the man.
The feel good story of the day.
Gee, the GOP really came through with a lot of help for this guy. That’s how you win, right GOP? Who’s constantly asking me to send them money?
I love David and Goliath stories. It’s always uplifting and sends a message of hope.
Durr is a candidate for the 3rd Legislative District, not for president of the N.J. Senate.
This is hilarious
If you're not the GOP pick, you won't get help. I ran for State House in NM in 2000. State party chairman told me point blank: "You won't get more than 5% of the vote in your district, so the party cannot support you financially"
I didn't win the the 54% D / 45% R district race, but being the first R to run in that district against the incumbent who hadn't had an opponent in 24 years, I was able to get 31% of the vote, and my hope was that I opened that district up to new R runs.
He’s not part of the club.
He will not be welcome.
GOPe leadership is dead to me too. The GOP front groups will never get a dime from me, only direct contributions to candidates I respect. I will vote in the GOP primaries to go RINO hunting and if a RINO wins he will not get my vote in the general. It is always better to have enemies outside the gates than within the city walls.
It is loooong past time to force the GOP to choose a side or die and be replaced with a new party.
This one is going to be easy to steal. It’s already very close and almost absurd it has come to this. Of course I’d love to be wrong . It would be a real life David vs. Goliath story!
Great story. I hope Mr. Durr wins.
Hope you're doing well. :)
Nope. Sweeney is already down by a couple thousand votes with over 95% of the vote counted and the publicity alone will force Sweeney to concede. This is a huge upset, it's the equivalent of someone in IL taking out Madigan for example, and it's also an indictment on the political class. You're going to see a lot of these candidates run for office simply by printing up flyers and doing traditional meet-and-greets. The consultant class, and even social media like Twitter and Facebook as they're going to start banning grassroots conservatives, are dead as a campaign tool.
No matter what the outcome is — (and I do have a fair amount of hope that things will turn out as they SHOULD for once) — $153 for a campaign, AND to be in the lead, is priceless. It seems that much of what we’ve been told all our lives is “set in stone”, is really not.
We can’t afford to lose truck drivers right now due to the shortage Maybe Sweeney, the defeated Dem, can replace Durr behind the wheel of the truck and pick up our stuff at the LA ports. Nahhh, he’ll probably steal it
State Senate, District 3 Final results
Edward Durr REP 51.78% • 32497 votes
Steve Sweeney DEM 48.22% • 30268 votes
