~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: U. S. Army Natick Soldier Systems Center, Massachusetts

MAnatick4

Natick Soldier Systems Center is a military research complex and installation in Natick, Massachusetts charged by the U.S. Department of Defense with the research and development (including fielding and sustainment) of food, clothing, shelters, airdrop systems, and other servicemember support items for the U.S. military.

The installation includes facilities from all the military services, not just the Army, and is so configured to allow cross-service cooperation and collaboration both within the facility and with the many academic, industrial and governmental institutions in the Greater Boston Area.

The SSC includes facilities designed to research and test both materials (textiles, combat rations), advanced technologies and human performance (human research volunteers) under simulated environmental extremes (altitude, heat, cold, wind, etc.).

The requirement for improved combat rations has led to groundbreaking developments in the field of food irradiation and freeze-drying techniques. Improved body armor, new military parachuting technology, and enhanced military garments designed for a variety of environments are all ongoing efforts.

Reaching Others for Jesus
Read: Matthew 28:16–20

Go and make disciples of all nations. Matthew 28:19

A decade ago, they didn’t know the name of Jesus. Hidden in the mountains of Mindanao in the Philippines, the Banwaon people had little contact with the outside world. A trip for supplies could take two days, requiring an arduous hike over rugged terrain. The world took no notice of them.

Then a mission group reached out, shuttling people in and out of the region via helicopter. This gained the Banwaon access to needed supplies, crucial medical help, and an awareness of the larger world. It also introduced them to Jesus. Now, instead of singing to the spirits, they chant their traditional tribal songs with new words that praise the one true God. Mission aviation established the critical link.

When Jesus returned to His heavenly Father, He gave His disciples these instructions: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). That command still stands.

Unreached people groups aren’t limited to exotic locales we haven’t heard of. Often, they live among us. Reaching the Banwaon people took creativity and resourcefulness, and it inspires us to find creative ways to overcome the barriers in our communities. That might include an “inaccessible” group you haven’t even considered—someone right in your neighborhood. How might God use you to reach others for Jesus?Tim Gustafson

Who are the hardest-to-reach people in your community? In what ways can you tell them about Jesus?

Father, please use me as You see fit in order that ________ might turn to You in faith.

I just went biking the other day through the annex to that base they had in Sudbury, they turned it into a wildlife refuge.

The annex is probably less than ten miles from the Natick Lab that you reference above. I think they took stuff over here to try new gear out for many years, then they stopped...eventually the gate in disappeared and you could go right in.

For years, it was completely deserted. You could go in there, they had these rusty railroad tracks that led up to huge concrete bunkers they used to store ammunition in.

Some the locks on the doors were broken off, and you could open the rusted doors and go inside...sometimes seeing a bare lightbulb in the overhead, or a rusty desk.

Nobody went in there. There were piles of odd junk here and there.

This is what it looks like now:

I liked it better before.

Also, this was a source of extreme angst to me-THIS was what they spent the infrastructure money on back in 2009-2012...those hundreds of billions of dollars with zero oversight, and they spent funds on this.

Too bad I can’t attend. I grew up there !!! They developed the food for the early space programs. I remember them coming to my 2nd grade class and giving us samples. ( good thing they didn’t bring the radioactive cockroaches - another story from Natick Labs )

I was the GM of the cable company in Natick back in the 80’s. I got a tour of that facility when they wanted to get cable installed. What a cool place ( they had freezers where clothing was tested.). Pun intended.

Fascinating place.

Howdy, luvie.

It was a nice day here. Sunny with some high, wispy clouds, a slight breeze, and 63 degrees when I went out for groceries this afternoon.
It’s downhill from there though since the temps will dip to low 50s the rest of the week, with lows in the 30s. Tonight’s our last 40s night.

Can’t say I’m ready for cold weather. it was mighty nice last week and that could have gone ahead and stayed a loooooooong time. LOL

Yes, it could stay in the 60s and 70s forever and I wouldn’t complain. LOL! Glad you had a nice day to enjoy today. It’ll be a good memory when you’re freezing. :)

Yes, days of 60s and 70s are great! At least we had some autumn here this year instead of going from summer straight into winter. That’s happened too many times.

It’s going to be rough when we get to the museum Friday morning because they turned the heat down before we left Saturday afternoon. It’s going to be right nippy in there for a bit.

They might be here to start on the cotton tomorrow. They were in the field next to us today, just on the other side of our woods. I don’t know if they’ll do ours next or the one across the road, but at least the end is almost in sight. YAY!
