Shanghai Disneyland was temporarily shut down from Sunday after a visitor was found to be Covid-19-positive, underscoring the economic disruption businesses in China face as the country strives to stamp out infections.
The world’s most populous nation has committed to maintaining “zero tolerance” for the virus despite criticism from business groups, a close to 80% vaccination rate, and a world which is gradually learning to live with Covid-19.
China is taking stringent measures to contain pockets of the coronavirus in the country. It recorded 48 domestic cases on Saturday across several provinces. Though extremely low compared with countries that are moving to live with the virus, the infections have prompted business closures and mass testing in certain areas. Shanghai Disneyland was required to test almost 34,000 people Sunday before visitors could leave the resort, after a woman who had attended the park a day earlier was found to be infected with Covid-19. Sunday’s visitors all tested negative but were ordered to self-isolate for another 24 hours before a second test.
The park and Disneytown, a shopping and dining complex, will be closed until at least Wednesday, Shanghai Disneyland said.
Mass testing a theme park quickly proved a surreal scene: As customers waited to be tested inside Shanghai Disneyland, parks employees tried to keep them entertained. The fireworks display continued as planned so guests would have something to watch while they waited, a spokesman said, and park workers helped manage crowd flow to avoid everyone trying to leave at once. Power chargers were handed out so guests could charge their phones, and families with younger children were allowed to leave.
The theme park reopened in May after being closed for several months, as China sought to reboot parts of its pandemic-hit economy.

Good thing a guest wasn’t wearing Pooh merchandise.
They’re slipping. I would have expected the ChiComs to stick them on planes and send them to the US. It’s what they did in the fall of 2019.
Who do the Chinese government think they are?
New Zealand or Australia?
The got shanghaied.
Was the visitor flashing DANGER DANGER ? LOL
Disneyland, the Happiest Place On Earth! Lock them in and turn up the music. After 24 hours of “It’s A Small World” they’ll do anything you want them to.

You better believe it. They are intoxicated by power over people.

Unfortunately, 7 people trapped in the “It’s a Small World” exhibit for 12 hours had to be euthanized.

It makes no sense to do that, and the Chinese are not stupid people.
I don’t think they would do it because they need to teach people who is in control there, everybody already knows.
I don’t think they are doing it to contain the virus. It’s not that big of a deal, and if you are that worried about it, what’s the park doing open?
Maybe they are doing it for appearances, for the international spin, but that seems flimsy, too.
Why do they do it?
Did the “weld” the guest inside the park?
Do they get free food and rides?
Because the panic is diminishing and they want to restoke it.
The whole “Chinese Covid response” so beloved of Fauci and the gang was staged to create maximum panic.
They don’t want to let it go.
