~ Hall of Heroes ~ Archer T. Gammon Info from here. | | Archer T. Gammon (September 11, 1918 – January 11, 1945) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in World War II. Gammon joined the Army from Roanoke, Virginia in March 1942, and by January 11, 1945 was serving as a Staff Sergeant in Company A, 9th Armored Infantry Battalion, 6th Armored Division. On that day, near Bastogne, Belgium, he destroyed a German machine gun position before beginning a one-man assault on a Tiger Royal tank. He silenced a supporting machine gun emplacement and killed two infantrymen before he was killed by a shot from the tank. For these actions, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor a year later, on February 13, 1946. Gammon, aged 26 at his death, was buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Danville, Virginia. | Staff Sergeant Gammon's official Medal of Honor citation reads: He charged 30 yards through hip-deep snow to knock out a machinegun and its 3-man crew with grenades, saving his platoon from being decimated and allowing it to continue its advance from an open field into some nearby woods. The platoon's advance through the woods had only begun when a machinegun supported by riflemen opened fire and a Tiger Royal tank sent 88mm. shells screaming at the unit from the left flank. S/Sgt. Gammon, disregarding all thoughts of personal safety, rushed forward, then cut to the left, crossing the width of the platoon's skirmish line in an attempt to get within grenade range of the tank and its protecting foot troops. Intense fire was concentrated on him by riflemen and the machinegun emplaced near the tank. He charged the automatic weapon, wiped out its crew of 4 with grenades, and, with supreme daring, advanced to within 25 yards of the armored vehicle, killing 2 hostile infantrymen with rifle fire as he moved forward. The tank had started to withdraw, backing a short distance, then firing, backing some more, and then stopping to blast out another round, when the man whose single-handed relentless attack had put the ponderous machine on the defensive was struck and instantly killed by a direct hit from the Tiger Royal's heavy gun. By his intrepidity and extreme devotion to the task of driving the enemy back no matter what the odds, S/Sgt. Gammon cleared the woods of German forces, for the tank continued to withdraw, leaving open the path for the gallant squad leader's platoon.
| The USAT Sgt. Archer T. Gammon which served the United States Army at the end of World War II was named in his honor. | Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families. This is a politics-free zone! Thanks for helping us in our mission! |

Howdy, Kathy.
Yes, a pretty kicked-back day today. I was going to (needed to) vacuum but just couldn’t seem to get around to it. LOL
Ruh roh. Hawk dining. Not too sure that sounds good. Lots of ducks still foraging does though.

Howdy, PRO!
How goes it up your way? Did you have decent weather this weekend? Maybe get a few of those last chores dealt with at Robin’s?
It was pretty nice here today but Friday and yesterday were dismal and wet. But ugly weather helps keep us busy at the museum so there was fun to be had anyway.

Hi radu!
son's over again for dinner and vide0-gaming.
I got some leaves all mowed up but there will be plenty more to fall.
Decent days with cold nights here.
DST ends next week, ugh, it always throws my sleep clock off.

Ring the Bell
Shout to God with cries of joy. Psalm 47:1
After an astounding thirty rounds of radiation treatments, Darla was finally pronounced cancer-free. As part of hospital tradition, she was eager to ring the “cancer-free bell” that marked the end of her treatment and celebrated her clean bill of health. Darla was so enthusiastic and vigorous in her celebratory ringing that the rope actually detached from the bell! Peals of joyous laughter ensued.
Darla’s story brings a smile to my face and gives me a sense of what the psalmist might have envisioned when he invited the Israelites to celebrate God’s work in their lives. The writer encouraged them to “clap [their] hands,” “shout to God,” and “sing praises” because God had routed their enemies and chosen the Israelites as His beloved people (Psalm 47:1, 6).
God doesn’t always grant us victory over our struggles in this life, whether health-related or financial or relational. He’s worthy of our worship and praise in even those circumstances because we can trust that He’s still “seated on his holy throne” (v. 8). When He does bring us to a place of healing—at least in a way we recognize in this earthly life—it’s cause for great celebration. We may not have a physical bell to ring, but we can joyfully celebrate His goodness to us with the same kind of exuberance Darla showed. — Kirsten Holmberg
How do you show your gratitude to God? What good work has He done in your life recently that merits celebration?
Thank You, God, for Your many gifts to me. I shout my praises to You and clap my hands in celebration of Your work in my life.

Good evening, Pro...we had high winds most of the night and any stray leaf is now down. My deck is covered in small twigs.
Hope your leaf mowing is going well.
It is up to us to remember those who did everything they could to keep us free.

Mowing leaves already, are you? Our leaves are finally turning but not many have fallen yet. Hubby will be on the mower soon enough though.
Our nights haven’t been too cold yet but the upcoming week will give us some lows in the 30s. Days will be decent enough at least.
Not really ready for cold weather to move in but it’s inevitable. LOL
I wish they’d live the time alone. Get it on standard time and leave it! The time change in the fall doesn’t bother me too much but in the spring - - UGH!

Poor duck. :-(
I’m surprised the others stayed around.
We had several rabbits around this year, which was a good sign coyotes weren’t living close by for a change.
A red-tailed hawk cut the number down by a few. The first one was my favorite because I could walk almost up to it before it would scamper off. It was so cute.
