With the winter months approaching, consumers may be forced to have to cut down on their holiday shopping as they prep for critical expenses such as heating their homes.
And this year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), paying for heat is going to take a sizable chunk out of some budgets.
With higher propane prices and slightly colder temperatures this winter compared to years past, the EIA projects that U.S. households that primarily rely on heating with propane will spend nearly 50% more during this heating season. While the Northeast and the South will spend 47% and 43% more, respectively, the Midwest, is projected to spend upwards of 69% more, according to the EIA.
The heating season, according to EIA, spans from October through March.
"This winter, I think, is going to be a colder one, at least for the interior sections from the Appalachians to the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes," Pastelok said, noting that winter will average between 1 to 3 degrees Fahrenheit below normal.
Roughly 5% of all U.S. households primarily use propane to heat their homes, according to EIA. However, at least 14% of homes in Vermont, New Hampshire, South Dakota, North Dakota and Montana primarily use propane, the agency said.

They want to inflict maximum suffering on Americans.
The Biden administration is going to blame the weather for craptastic consumer spending at Christmas.
Goodness. Are people really this stupid?
We’ve already had to sell one kid.
The other one’s worried.
Elections have consequences
Hey ar least no mean tweets lol
I should not enjoy the misery/malaise so much but I do!
We use a propane furnace, water heater and cooktop. We also have a woodshed containing 5 cords of dry Douglas fir if needed.
And for that reason, they will make sure it happens as much as they are able.
They cannot control the weather but they sure will breathlessly report on every anomaly as if it never happened before and is an indicator of the impending end of the world as we know it.
They will so stress out the gullible and duped that it will ruin everything for them.
Duh....fire a few more people because they’re not vaccinated.
Winter is going to be cold in Upstate NY....imagine that.
God works all things for good. Bidon and his minions are actually helping famalies get back to the true meaning of Thanksgiving and Christmas. Perhaps we will focus more on family and real sharing rather than lining the pockets of big corporations with wothless purchases. Just a thought.
Maybe a good time to just have a home style Christmas Day to talk about the reason for the day, ya think? Old fashion Christmas before Hollyweird usurped it with their stupid Holiday films of the 40’s?
Back in the Day, they used to run convoys behind plow trucks on the NYS Thruway to keep peeps moving during snow storms.
These daze they just give up and shut down.
…..may be forced to have to…. as opposed to may have to be forced to? I wonder…..
Yes, I well remember how Christmas was called off when there were cold winters back during the Arab oil crisis.
Will this help defeat the Dims in 2022 and 2024? If so, I can live with the cold wx.
It’s cold in winter, who knew?
Maybe Hugo Chavez...I mean Maduro, will be a generous guy and help his current Marxist buddy, Chomo Joe, like he did when Obama drove fuel prices through the roof.
noting that this winter will average between 1 and 3 degrees Fahrenheit below normal, what the hell are people going to do when they have to reduce emissions of co2 to keep the planet from getting too hot but they have to increase emissions to keep themselves from getting too cold. Either they sacrifice comfort to save the planet or they are selfish bastards.
And when do we get to be told that we are making progress against global warming climate change? Why is the climate emergency not showing any sign of letting up? They just keep saying cut emissions. I drive an electric car and have solar panels but I don’t hear that we have slowed climate change. Progressives are not good at motivating people. Just like with covid. I had covid and got 3 shots about it plus the flu shot yet there is no mention anywhere that we might be winning. They just keep changing the goal. First we flattered the curve. Then we stayed away from hospitals with cancer and other problems to keep from overloading the system. We have been wearing masks for what seems like 2 years. But no politician will come out and say we are doing a good job just keep it up a little longer. They just want everyone to get shots now.
Seattle has had below average temps for much of October.
From downtown, we could clearly see snow on the front range of the Cascades in the first week of October.
That definitely does not happen every year.
A couple years ago, Seattle voted to block coal trains to our port and from using any tracks inside the city limits.
Western USA strip mined coal is some of the cleanest in the world.
I do not know if the RR track ban put the regional coal companies out of business, or not.
We are also planning to shut down all our hydro-powered electricity, too, because it upsets the fish and the native American gods, or something.
No coal. No hydro. No high voltage power lines near residential neighborhoods.
Where is our heat supposed to come from, Seattle?
