West Virginia—itself a product of intrastate secession during the Civil War—could gain three new counties currently part of western Maryland on the off chance that lawmakers in both states agree.
Six Republican lawmakers from Maryland’s three westernmost counties—Garrett, Allegany, and Washington—wrote to Republican legislative leaders in West Virginia earlier this month with a request that they “advise on [the] next steps” to join The Mountain State.
“We believe this arrangement may be mutually beneficial for both states and for our local constituencies.”
Western Maryland is much more rural and conservative than the rest of the state, which is dominated by the deep blue Baltimore metro area and its resident federal government employees and lobbyists.
“We wouldn’t be doing this if we didn’t feel there is a strong sense of unrest and unhappiness among people in our rural area of the state,” said Wendell Beitzel, a Western Maryland delegate and cosigner of the letter.

God Bless 'Em if they can do it . Western Maryland has as much in common with Baltimore City, Prince Georges and Montgomery Counties as Texas does with California.
At some point, it becomes, “stop asking, and just do it. Make them stop you.” If enough do it at once, there will be no stopping them.
You could also throw in Frederick County as well.
No place for the Eastern Shore to escape to. They should dynamite the bridges.
If we can get together a group of conservatives here in Northern Virginia. .at least, maybe 10 or 15 of us. . .can we be a part of West Virginia, too?. . you know, sort of like West Berlin during the Cold War.
I’m with you! That makes two of us.
I can be i. Garret County in about 20 min. Good ole boys, however Deep Creek Lake is getting an influx of eastern Marylanders building summer homes.
Wait until this is done in East Washington, Oregon, and California. Idaho is about to grow.
Please make it so, I want to escape the democratic socialist peoples republic of Maryland.
I was going to say, if there are other counties that fit in
that political situation, be sure and toss them in for the
full benefit of this move.
Actually Pennsylvania,Delaware, and Virginia have contiguous borders with Maryland's Eastern shore...but A+ about the bridges.
As a born and raised Allegany County boy, do me a solid and go slam a cold one at the Honi-Honi Bar on my behalf. I honestly hope that this gets some traction, by whatever means.
What does the composition of the Maryland legislature look like?
I have to think the counties that want out are likely a net positive to the state on taxes vs services and Maryland pols will fight to keep them in.
Sounds like BOTH states legislatures have to approve.
The people might be better off to just move.
This secession movement brought to you by Reynolds v. Sims, ensuring that western counties have weak representation in both houses of the legisl00ture.
Most of Maryland is wonderful. If we could nuke three counties, it would be a terrific state.
Deport the Baltimorons to Wash DC!
They are running to the Carolinas.
I cover the north and south of both.
They are not all conservative. Had one last year saying follow the Cuomo plan on Nextdoor.
He got roasted right well. He said he was surprised.
Phhhtt.
Perhaps PG and Montgomery counties have more in common with B’city. But, Howard, Kent, north of B’city like Hagerstown and the counties towards the Eastern shore doesn’t run blue. Like a lot of states, there are heavily populated areas of Democrats . But, all around that area has a lot of conservatives.
The Baltimorons couldn’t afford DC, which is gentrifying so fast it makes your head spin. Move the DC gangbangers to Baltimore, where they will fit right in.
LOL! Don't forget Baltimore City... not that anyone would notice. The city government's big accomplishment year-to-date is the banning of plastic bags at retail establishments. The infrastructure its crumbling, homicides and crime in general are soaring, the schools are a damn disgrace but... let's ban plastic bags!
