Alabama man who avoided earlier execution date put to death

ATMORE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama man who avoided execution in February was put to death Thursday for the 1991 killing of a woman who was abducted during a robbery and then shot in a cemetery.

Willie B. Smith III, 52, received a lethal injection at a prison in southwest Alabama. He was pronounced dead at 9:47 p.m. local time.

Smith was convicted of kidnapping and murdering 22-year-old Sharma Ruth Johnson in Birmingham.

Prosecutors said Smith had a shotgun when he abducted Johnson in October 1991 from an ATM location in the Birmingham area. He withdrew money using her bank card and then took her to a cemetery and shot her in the back of the head, they said. Johnson was the sister of a Birmingham police officer.

“Sharma Ruth Johnson was abducted at gunpoint, threatened while in the trunk of the car, terrorized, assaulted, and ultimately, Willie B. Smith, III brutally killed her,” Gov. Kay Ivey said in a statement issued after the execution. “In that final moment of this young lady’s short life, Mr. Smith, after learning Ms. Johnson was the daughter of a law enforcement officer, made the choice to put a shotgun to her head, stealing this woman’s future.”

“The evidence in this case was overwhelming, and justice has been rightfully served,” she added.

Good! They finally stopped the World and let the son of a bitch off. The World is a better place with him gone. My sympathies are with the poor woman he murdered.

Waiting 30 years for justice is no justice at all.

I’m going to respectfully disagree with you slightly, to wit; and that is that being on death row 30 years is about the most horrible life a human can lead. Indeed, most of us would rather be dead!

So, he received some severe punishment along the way and ultimately he got what he asked for, low IQ or not.

“Do I have any pleasure at all that the wicked should die?” says the Lord GOD, “and not that he should turn from his ways and live?”

—Ezekiel 18:23

We must pray that this perpetrator did in fact find repentance and ultimately a Christian ending to his otherwise wicked life.

Thirty years. He got to stay above ground eight years longer than his victim’s entire life. I understand the need for appeals, but I don’t understand why that would take thirty years. I see that several years ago he chose his method of execution. Then his lawyer argued he didn’t understand the paperwork because of his low IQ. (He did have the brains to plan and commit this sickening crime, though.) The kicker was the state has no method of using one of the offered forms of execution. If he had picked that, he would still be alive. SMH. Well, at least this poor young woman and her family FINALLY got some justice, although I am not sure the system has that as its first concern.

Yes. I think that would be a very miserable life. It would be better to be executed soon, than to wait not knowing when, year after year.

I did hear a funny story about a retard who was executed. They gave him his last meal, but he didn't finish it. They asked him if he was done. And he said no, he was saving it for after the execution. True story.
