His inclinations are moderate, similar to Bush and Perry, but in an era of increased conservative militancy, pursuit of moderation would lead to his defeat in next year’s primary. Abbott also knows that DeSantis’ stock has risen to the Florida governor’s resistance to Washington while Noem’s stock crashed after waffling on transgender issues.
You’re not cynical. Just paying attention. Gotta say that Abbott gets at least some credit for this, even though he’s just running scared.

Short version: Abbott is up for re election next year. He is getting heat from several challengers, so he has to do something. For what ever reason, at least someone is taking the border problem seriously.

That's the real question. The Guard arrests them and the state court prosecutes them for trespass. The get 30 days in the county lock up and then what?
Illegal Mexicans can be returned but Mexico will refuse to accept anyone who is not a Mexican National.
This gives them the only option to give them to DHS, who will in turn release them on the street pending a court hearing some time in the next century.
This operation may have some deterrent effect and push some aliens away from Texas border. They will just shift to CA, NM, and AZ.
That is not a Texas problem.

Yeah, that one was really good. Another one I enjoy re-watching is Barney’s first car purchase. That little old lady should have received an award! And another of my favorites is the nurse’s mission to give that farmer some type of a shot.
