This missile can circle the Earth before hitting its target. This is the best way to avoid the US missile defense system established in South Korea or in the Pacific. There is no such US defense for missiles coming from South Pole or West.
In term of budget, this puts an incredible pressure on US defense budget. From 5G/6G, high speed trains, radar systems, Electric Vehicles, Space Exploration, chips, drones, AI, Deep Sea Exploration, Nuclear Energy,... China is becoming the place to go. As Putin told, US is making same mistakes as Soviet Union.
China can now EMP America at will.

On balance this story has negative information content. A minus sign. Other than what some Chinese say, we know nothing about the terminal phase or the circular error.

The Germans had an experimental program for something called the “Antipodal Bomber” which was a manned, rocket-powered aircraft that would “skip” across the atmosphere like a smooth stone across a pond. The idea was to get extreme range from the craft to be able to bomb NYC. In the days before rockets were powerful enough to lift a payload into orbit this was the best that could be done.
NASA’s X-15 program inadvertently proved the concept during a mission piloted by Neil Armstrong where the high-altitude rocket plane actually left earth atmosphere and ‘bounced off’ instead of smoothly descending. Armstrong managed to get the craft down but had an extremely long glide to a successful landing.
The question is ‘why’ would the Chinese be playing with these concepts? Maybe it’s a way to evade known US air defense capabilities — specifically the Navy’s Aegis system. I would think there are easier and cheaper ways to do this, but perhaps not.

The Space Shuttle did not have an ablation shield, and it re-entered safely from orbit all but one time (the other, of course, failed on ascent).
