Columbus’ fear of Islam, rooted in Europe’s Crusades, shaped his view of Native Americans (Islamophobia-obsessed "author" rewrites history in LATimes)

Op-Ed: Columbus’ fear of Islam, rooted in Europe’s Crusades, shaped his view of Native Americans A statue of Christopher Columbus with his face and hands spray-painted red A statue of Christopher Columbus in Miami was vandalized during protests in June 2020.(Lynne Sladky / Associated Press)

In all that has been written about Columbus — from his being the first Italian American to the progenitor of a continental genocide — one of the most crucial aspects of his biography is missing: A primary force behind Columbus’ Atlantic crossings was a fear and hatred of Islam.

This shaped how white Europeans engaged with the “New World” and its native peoples for centuries, and how today’s Americans understand the world. It should influence how we think about the second Monday in October — whether you call it Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples Day or Italian Heritage Day.

Columbus was born into Europe’s anti-Islamic mind-set in 1451, raised on tales of the Crusades and the territorial losses his hometown of Genoa suffered after the Ottoman Empire’s capture of Constantinople in 1453.

Absolute nonsense. I’d love to see the PRIMARY sources on this. LoL...

___

I doubt it too. The author's AGENDA is clear. From his books, all slong. To link so many events to anti Islam supposedly.

How about not everything is about his Islam?

It's also a nod, an effort to ask alliances from native American to the Islamic lobby like CAIR...

“This author seems to be willfully ignorant about the “European Crusades” The Crusades were a response to Islamic aggression. The goals was to RE-CAPTURE the Holy Land from the Muslims for the Byzantine Empire”

And my understanding is that the Europeans went to North Africa to stop the piracy (and worse) that made life on the Mediterranean next to impossible. At least for North Africa, they had no desire to be there, but also no choice.

Columbus and some of his crew were Jewish; fled Spain just before due to the Edict of Expulsion On August 3, 1492, all Jews were required to leave Spain. Boarding their vessels before midnight, and sailing one-half hour before sunrise, Columbus and his crew set out on his now-famous voyage. 1 His historic voyage was financed by wealthy and influential Jews-many themselves converts-rather than a magnanimous King and Queen of Spain.

Seems more likely Europe wanted a route to the east to avoid Muslims. The intertribal warfare (genocide?) was why Europe was able to conquer the new world.

In 1492: the end of the 781 year war with Islam in Spain. It was called the Reconquista.

In 1492: The start of the inquisitions. Which Spain did what Sicily did in 1224 expelled every last Muslim from the Island without exceptions. Spain made the mistake in my opinion of giving a choice. Convert, leave or punishment.

In 1492: The route through East was blocked by Islamic raiders and pirates. Columbus thought the world was smaller and looked for a route to India that was safer.

When Harris floated the idea by Plugs, he said:
"What a GREAT idea. Can you round up these children for the show? Be sure to let me know when to swing by and give them all a hug."
