US Navy Nuclear Engineer, Wife Charged by DOJ With Selling Nuclear Submarine Secrets

A U.S. Navy nuclear engineer was charged by the Department of Justice for allegedly selling secret information about nuclear submarines to an undercover agent who posed as an operative from a foreign country.

Jonathan Toebbe and his wife, Diana, were arrested on Oct. 9 in West Virginia, the Justice Department (DOJ) said on Oct. 10. They were charged with violating the Atomic Energy Act and will appear in a court in West Virginia on Oct. 12.

A statement from the agency said that Toebbe, 42, and his wife, 45, sold information “concerning the design of nuclear-powered warships to a person they believed was a representative of a foreign power.” According to the Justice Department, the person was actually an FBI agent.

“The complaint charges a plot to transmit information relating to the design of our nuclear submarines to a foreign nation,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement. “The work of the FBI, Department of Justice prosecutors, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, and the Department of Energy was critical in thwarting the plot charged in the complaint and taking this first step in bringing the perpetrators to justice.”

Toebbe is an employee with the Navy who served as an engineer and had an active national security clearance, giving him access to restricted data, according to the DOJ.

“Toebbe worked with and had access to information concerning naval nuclear propulsion including information related to military sensitive design elements, operating parameters, and performance characteristics of the reactors for nuclear-powered warships,” the statement reads.

Starting in 2020, he began selling secrets for tens of thousands of dollars in cryptocurrency to an undercover agent and at one point hid a digital memory card containing documents in a peanut butter sandwich at a “dead drop” location in West Virginia, according to the Justice Department.

When politician get rich openly boasting about how they have stolen and given technology to our enemies for personal gain; why wouldn’t regular citizens think that they can’t do the same thing?

We need to dust off the charge of treason; and execute EVERY traitor in Congress, in all branches of federal, state and local governments and make hanging and firing squads a reality again

Other articles on this subject indicate the FBI reached out to him and convinced him to do it. Entrapment?

Most likely the case. It isn't like he could go on a website and look for contacts in foreign governments who are looking for people willing to sell info. Short of him walking into an embassy ( like Walker did ), spies like this are usually approached by someone. So it looks like the FBI was fishing for people to see who would catch the bait.

Sounds a bit like the John A. Walker espionage ring. Remember them? Walker was a Navy CWO, and spy for the Soviet Union between 1967 - 1985. Supposedly the worst security breach to date. The New York Times reported in 1987 “is sometimes described as the most damaging Soviet spy ring in history.”

Well, that was 34 years ago, and the NYT is no longer considered trustworthy, and neither is the current DOJ. Will that same DOJ investigate high level bribe taking? A crime that may exceed anything ever even imagined by a US office holder? Enriching himself and his corrupt family by taking bribes from the CCP? I won’t hold my breath.

Entrapment?

The putative "buyer" begins by saying, "We only interested in perfectly legal information. We don't want you to break any laws. Just tell us generally what you know about nuclear subs - like what one might expect to find in a Wikipedia article."

Then, gradually, they tempt the mark into divulging more-sensitive info: "We don't understand this one aspect. It would really help if you could supply us with a diagram showing this. Of course: Nothing that couldn't be found in the Internet!"

Eventually, the mark admits that he'd have to break the law to obtain the needed info. So the "buyer" replies, "So you're saying that you're offering to break the law for us?"

BINGO!

It's no longer entrapment.
