Roswell Winans Info from here. |
| Brigadier General Roswell Winans (December 9, 1887–April 7, 1968) was a United States Marine, who as a First Sergeant, earned the Medal of Honor during combat in the Dominican Republic. Roswell Winans was born on December 9, 1887 in Brookville, Indiana. He died on April 7, 1968, at the San Diego Naval Hospital, San Diego, California. He was 80.Brigadier General Winans, much-decorated veteran of almost forty years of military service, retired from active duty on August 1, 1946. His combat service goes back to the Banana Wars in Central America and in France during World War I. He earned the United States' highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for action during an engagement at Guayacanas in the Dominican Republic on July 3, 1916. Serving there as a first sergeant, he was cited for extraordinary heroism in action against a considerable force of rebels on the line of march of his unit. After serving four years in the United States Army, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on October 10, 1912. He rose to the rank of first sergeant, seeing duty during the Mexican, Haitian and Dominican campaigns, before he was commissioned a second lieutenant during World War I. A captain at the end of that war, he served prior to World War II at various Marine posts and stations in this country, as well as taking part in the Second Nicaraguan Campaign. He was a colonel at the outbreak of World War II, and was promoted to brigadier general upon retirement on August 1, 1946. | The Medal of Honor was awarded to then-First Sergeant Roswell Winans, USMC, on October 30, 1916 for his actions in Guayacanas on July 3, 1916. Rank and organization: Brigadier General (then First Sergeant), U.S. Marine Corps. Place and date: Guayacanas, Dominican Republic, July 3, 1916. Entered service at: Washington. Born. December 9, 1887, Brookville, Ind. G.O. No.: 244, October 30, 1916.Medal of Honor Citation During an engagement at Guayacanas on July 3, 1916, 1st Sgt. Winans participated in action against a considerable force of rebels on the line of march. During a running fight of 1,200 yards, our forces reached the enemy entrenchments and Cpl. Joseph A. Glowin, U.S.M.C., placed the machinegun, of which he had charge, behind a large log across the road and immediately opened fire on the trenches. He was struck once but continued firing his gun, but a moment later he was again struck and had to be dragged out of the position into cover. 1st Sgt. Winans, U.S.M.C., then arrived with a Colt's gun which he placed in a most exposed position, coolly opened fire on the trenches and when the gun jammed, stood up and repaired it under fire. All the time Glowin and Winans were handling their guns they were exposed to a very heavy fire which was striking into the logs and around the men, 7 men being wounded and 1 killed within 20 feet. 1st Sgt. Winans continued firing his gun until the enemy had abandoned the trenches. | Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families. This is a politics-free zone! Thanks for helping us in our mission! |

October 11, 2021At the King’s Table
So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table like one of the king’s sons. 2 Samuel 9:11
“He’ll live,” the vet announced, “but his leg will have to be amputated.” The stray mongrel my friend had brought in had been run over by a car. “Are you the owner?” There would be a hefty surgery bill, and the puppy would need care as it recovered. “I am now,” my friend replied. Her kindness has given that dog a future in a loving home.
Mephibosheth saw himself as a “dead dog,” unworthy of favor (2 Samuel 9:8). Being lame in both feet due to an accident, he was dependent on others to protect and provide for him (see 4:4). Furthermore, after the death of his grandfather, King Saul, he probably feared that David, the new king, would order all enemies and rivals to the throne killed, as was the common practice of the time.
Yet, out of love for his friend Jonathan, David ensured that Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth would always be safe and cared for as his own son (9:7). In the same way, we who were once God’s enemies, marked for death, have been saved by Jesus and given a place with Him in heaven forever. That’s what it means to eat at the banquet in the kingdom of God that Luke describes in his gospel (Luke 14:15). Here we are—the sons and daughters of a King! What extravagant, undeserved kindness we’ve received! Let’s draw near to God in gratitude and joy. — Karen Kwek
When are you likely to forget that God protects and cares for you? How could 2 Samuel 9:6–13 encourage you during such times?
Dear Jesus, thank You for saving me and giving me a place at Your table forever. Remind me that I’m Your dear child, and help me to always praise and trust You.

Good evening, radu...how’s the resting going from you Friday and Saturday at the museum?
Did you have some good tours?
A bunch of rain yesterday, and I forgot to put my gauge out after the snow a couple weeks back. My leaves are sopping wet and impossible to sweep off the driveway. Oh well....

Today’s been a VERY laid back day. There were only two of us working yesterday and we stayed on the go all day.
Then we went to a friend’s birthday party last night though I really wasn’t up for it. It was fun and we didn’t get home until 2:30
I’ve had no energy today. LOL
It sounds like you’re having as much trouble dealing with your leaves as farmers here are having getting crops up. Raining often enough nothing can dry out.

Howdy, PRO.
How are things up your way? Are you getting those temps in the 30s you mentioned several days ago?
It feels like summer here. It’s hard to believe it’s October.

Hey radu, uneventful weekend, son was over last night for dinner and hanging.
We have been in the 30's and have a freeze warning for tomorrow and Tuesday nights, that's typical for this time of the year.
Just watching the leaves fall.
How was your weekend?

It sounds like a good weekend for you, other than those nippy temps. You can hang on to those, please. We aren’t quite ready for 30s to be sent down our way just yet. LOL
It was a good weekend here but it left me too tuckered out to get anything done today. Just two of us at the museum yesterday so we stayed busy. Then a friend’s birthday party last night kept us out until 2:30 a.m. and that made for a looooong day. I’m gettin’ too old for that but heck, it was a fun time and I have no complaints. :-)

Hi Kathy, retired life is good in-between bouts of old age aches and pains that it brings, but I am Blessed nonetheless.
Cold weather nights are here with freeze warnings but a typical Fall so far.

Howdy, luvie.
Had a great time t the museum and met several fun folks.
No rain here over the weekend. Just beautiful comfy weather. But rain chances are in the forecast pretty much all week. The storm system that gave you the high winds is coming through here tomorrow.
