COVID vaccines cut the risk of transmitting Delta — but not for long

The first study to look directly at how well vaccines prevent the spread of the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 brings good news and bad.

The study shows that people who become infected with the Delta variant are less likely to pass the virus to their close contacts if they have already had a COVID-19 vaccine than if they haven’t1. But that protective effect is relatively small, and dwindles alarmingly at three months after the receipt of the second shot.

The findings add to scientists’ understanding of the vaccination’s effect on curbing Delta’s spread, but are “both more and less encouraging”, says Marm Kilpatrick, an infectious-disease researcher at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Previous studies have found that people infected with Delta have roughly the same levels of viral genetic materials in their noses regardless of whether they’d previously been vaccinated, suggesting that vaccinated and unvaccinated people might be equally infectious2. But studies also suggest that vaccinated people are less likely to spread the virus if they subsequently catch Delta: their levels of nasal virus drop faster than do those of unvaccinated infected people, and their nasal swabs contain smaller amounts of infectious virus3,4.

"Unfortunately, the vaccine’s beneficial effect on Delta transmission waned to almost negligible levels over time. In people infected 2 weeks after receiving the vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca, both in the UK, the chance that an unvaccinated close contact would test positive was 57%, but 3 months later, that chance rose to 67%. The latter figure is on par with the likelihood that an unvaccinated person will spread the virus."

So we started out last week at 7 months, then it was cut to 5 and now it is three months.

How long before it is reported we need continuous IVs of the stuff?

Don’t care, still not taking it.

I’m imagining a retractable, rechargeable smart phone appliance. You could get it refilled weekly at your pharmacy, or better, Amazon could ship you a daily update.

And all of this over the past month. The continuing failure can't be hidden any longer.

Depending upon what they mean by "relatively small," an "alarming drop" from "relatively small" after three months sounds to me like close to no benefit at all. If "relatively small" means a 50% reduction of infection, an "alarming drop" would be about a 10% reduction. If "relatively small" means a 25% reduction, an "alarming drop" from that would be to about a 5% reduction. With a 4% margin of error, that's close to zero.

...and even before the 3 months are up, you only have a slightly lower chance of spreading the virus compared to the unvaccinated.

They go from 10% less likely to spread the virus compared to the unvaccinated to nearly the same likelihood in 3 months.

So even with boosters every 3 months, and everyone on the planet vaccinated, COVID would be with us forever, according to these statistics.

I heard the vaxxed carry more of a viral load and don’t know it because their symptoms aren’t as bad.

our citizens are being required to be used as experimental lab rats while our government doesn’t require the invaders it’s spreading across our country to participate in the same experiment...

It will be with us until everyone has been infected. Seems to me that this has been their unspoken belief the entire time. If the vaccines work to reduce risk of serious illness and death that is a good thing - we just don’t know the true cost of that good thing at this time.

Bottom line is they have known since at least January if not earlier that the vaccines have waning efficacy and do not dramatically reduce chances of infection or spread. Which makes the current policies about who can go out and about and who cannot a little ridiculous - or working intended to encourage mass infection.

According to the CDC, there were over 22,000 more deaths "associated with COVID" in the U.S. in September 2021 then there were in September 2020. In September 2020, no one in this country had been vaccinated for COVID. As of September 2021, millions had been. While there is surely some explanation for this, I am at a loss to understand how, in light of these data alone, it can be said that the vaccines reduce the risk of death.

This report conflicts with the report that tells us that 60% of Senior Citizens hospitalized for Covid are fully vaccinated. See here:

Can someone please explain this?

I saw an infographic someone posted here of the Clinical Trial data. It was some sort of Venn diagram showing that (if I remember it correctly) during the trial there were virtually no difference in the numbers of deaths between placebo vs drug. But once the placebo/control arm crossed over to the drug arm (which they did way too soon imo) the deaths in the formerly placebo arm jumped. In raw numbers it still wasn’t very high overall but noticeable. The FDA should not have given approval to Pfizer for many many reasons I have spelled out before.

As for the extra 22,000 more deaths, who knows. Maybe after being paid to sit around for 16 months 100,000’s of people became obese or diabetic etc. Maybe the vaccine is not good for people with prior infection. Maybe there are other variants or mutations within the variant. Your guess is as good as mine.
