From a linked article:
“The intervention also increased physical distancing in villages that received the intervention”

It would be useful to clarify how much of the (notably small) net benefit was due to the increase in physical distancing, and how much was due to the masks themselves. Was physical distancing all that mattered, in the end?

Also, reading the article, it looks like the masks were distributed for free, accompanied by rewards. No threats, no mandates, no punishments, no coercion. Was that so hard?

This is not a controlled study, there was physical distancing (in the article), and who knows what other measures not mentioned in the article. In controlled studies, with just masks, there is no benefit.

Mask don’t work for this type of airborne pathogen period. Cloth to the N95 are useless. Not to mention the way people wear them, reuse them, beards etc.

You’d need to wear a proper fitting respirator if you were that desperate.

That’s the facts.

The secret to not contracting viruses is to not touch your face, mouth, eyes or nose.

Wearing a mask makes you constantly claw at your face, mouth nose and eyes.

I rarely touch my face and don’t “catch” stuff but for the two weeks I was wearing my half-ass lace ‘mask’, all I did was paw at my face.

This is what a virologist wears to prevent infection...but don't worry, your bandana works just as good. :)

I’ve heard people say they hang their masks on their rearview mirror to “sanitize” them.

*Somehow*

This study does not prove that mask wearing reduced illness.
It proves that massive mask wearing PROMOTION reduced illness. The difference is that constant reminders of the danger of illness might be changing other behavior.
For example, did the constant reminders to wear a mask also effect the likelihood of proper hand washing? self isolation if ill? crowd avoidance?
If the difference is caused by some combination of all these factors how long can you expect the behavioral differences to last? Will people eventually ‘tune out’ the messages?

Deep in the study, they disclose that the proportion of mask-wearers dropped a few weeks after the messaging ended though it remained ten percentage points higher than the control group when they stopped collecting data.

At some point I suspect the gap shrinks to zero.

What you're proving is what I was trying to prove...studies where there is some alleged "success" in any COVID19 mandate invariably reveals the terrible underbelly of the mandate. The corollary, is that The Powers That Be probably are looking to make this an Endless Pandemic for kicks and giggles.

When I see a headline like this, would the WaPo tell the truth on this subject? Nope.

Didn’t read it. If it’s a good study it will show up elsewhere

Pray tell, how did they adjust their statistics to incorporate the fact that when you’re the only one around wearing a surgical mask, people tend to give you a wide berth, especially in a 3rd-world sh*thole where the general population is woefully undereducated and tends to believe in superstition over science?
