An Auburn woman has been charged with setting fire to a historic Montgomery church last week.
Xiaoqin Yan, 27, is charged with second-degree arson, according to court records made public Tuesday. Yan was arrested Oct. 4 and remains held in the Montgomery County Detention Center on $30,000 bond.
According to charging documents against Yan, she used an “open flame to ignite an ignitable liquid,” causing $25,000 in damage to First Baptist Church on Perry Street.
According to court records, Yan is a citizen of China who is in the U.S. on a student visa. Her visa has now been revoked.
Because of the revocation, she has been ordered held until she appears in court on Wednesday.
The fire was discovered shortly before 3 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at the South Perry Street Church.
Pastor Mark L. Bethea posted on Facebook that the fires were started in the sanctuary and the historic Stakely Sanctuary. Firefighters, he said, arrived quickly and minimized what he said could have been a catastrophic event.
BTW she is not a student and DA ask for an increase in bail.
Is an auburn person a new sort of Chinese Redskin?
Maybe the Washington Football Team can become the Washington Auburns.
As a Cornell Alumnus (home of the aptly named Big Red) I would find that fitting.
Moreover, the Kentucky pronunciation of the Kentucky town of the same spelling is “orbin.”
As a bin is slang for a garbage can, the rough equation of D.C. with the same would be fitting.
MSM are pro-China; receives money from them.
I wonder what her motive was? Asians in the US generally don’t do this sort of thing; their crime-rate is very low.
Auburn university Is located roughly 60 miles from the first Baptist Church in Montgomery.
if you search you’ll see a few stories with more details. Unless she truly has mental issues then this story needs digging into.
Reads like a hate crime.
And two tiers down from Alabama.
Roll Tide.
(If it had read Auburn Student I never would have thought of the colour)
She’s probably crazy. Severe mental illness often manifests around the early 20s, I feel like esp. in women but I could be just making that part up.
If my memory serves me correctly, this is the second news post of Asian women starting fires/being arrested/something in the last 30 days.
bond increased to 150k today. stated she has “strong ties” to another country...sounds like they think she is a flight risk.
We probably have thousands of these time bombs in the country - Chinese, from many Muslim nations, Taliban, etc.
Does the church support missionaries in Taiwan or is she simiply anti-Christian?
Don’t know....but saw Chinese characters (I assume) in the search. First link.

Accross the street from the Courthouse, and a convenient 3 block walk from the county jail.
He, (pastor), also asked for prayer for the international community at the church, which has a long-running Conversational English school that serves English as a Second Language students in the region, as well as other ministries.
“To my knowledge, this person was not part of our international fellowship at FBC (International Bible Fellowship and Worship, Conversational English, English as a Second Language, Citizenship Classes, etc…),” Bethea said, adding, “We deeply love and value our international brothers and sisters.”

The woman, Viola Liu, was found at the scene of the wildland fire on Aug. 11 wearing a bikini and “covered in scratches and soot,” the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
Liu, 43, of Fremont, later admitted to starting the fire in the area of the Aspen Creek Tract near Echo Summit, which was corroborated by other evidence in the investigation, sheriff’s officials said.
I hope she gets imprisoned in our finest hard core, lock down, medium security state prison complete with violent offenders, razor wire and guard towers.
I also hope there are some very angry, vicious and hungry women who are craving the taste of Chinese.
