Sen. Joe Manchin, a centrist Democrat who is blocking a massive social welfare spending passage, said he would consider raising the cost of the measure from his proclaimed limit of $1.5 trillion to as high as $2.2 trillion in order to reach a compromise that can satisfy party lawmakers in both chambers.
Manchin told reporters in the Capitol he won’t rule out a measure that costs between $1.9 trillion and $2.2 trillion, which is the range President Joe Biden recommended to House Democrats in a closed-door session last week.
Last week, Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, announced he would not support a bill that costs more than $1.5 trillion, but he also suggested he’d be willing to compromise. He called a plan by House Democrats to spend $3.5 trillion on a host of new government programs “fiscal insanity” and said the tax hikes they plan to use to pay for the programs would be “vindictive.”
Manchin did not specifically pledge to raise his cap above the $1.5 trillion.
“I’m not ruling anything out, but the bottom line is I want to make sure that we’re strategic, and we do the right job, and we don’t basically add more to the concerns we have right now,” Manchin told reporters Tuesday as he entered a closed-door meeting with fellow Democrats.

The briefcase with non-sequential $100 bills must have been delivered to his houseboat.

Either that or a new shipment of fresh illegeal alien children sex slaves to molest.
Not kidding.
1) Of course. Who honestly expected anything else from Manchin - he ALWAYS sells out to the highest bidder.
2) Rest assured, the amount of actual spending will not change much - just how the government counts it. This is yet another example of government deception being used to lie to and thus rip off the taxpayers (and their children and grandchildren).
3) The worst of this bill is not the spending, but the provisions dealing with voting, amnesty, guns, etc. If the bill was to spend a single dollar, I would still be against it.
4) In view of Manchin’s (totally expected) cave, we are now dependent upon Kyrsten Sinema to stop this monstrosity. I take a little comfort in the fact that she was badgered like crazy (including being followed into the bathroom) by radical (illegal) immigrants who were most likely hired by her own party’s activists/supporters, and that the WH has shown no sympathy to her whatsoever. Were I her, I would vote against every aspect of this bill until it just plain dies - but not before getting the absolute assurance from the Republicans that they will stay unanimously opposed.
He’s waiting on the rest to show up in his off shore account.
I say sink his yaught!
Slo Joe can always count on Rollover Joe to take one for the team….can’t believe West Virginians put up with this clown…
He just proves that the best Democrat is worse than the worst Republican.
He needs a bigger boat.
