Tesla’s Musk Says U.S. Electricity Production Needs to Double to Power Transition to EV Vehicles
Barron's ^ | October 3, 2021 | Al Root

Tesla CEO Elon Musk believes that electrifying personal transportation will require electricity generating capacity to double.

And while ramping up output might feel daunting for anyone worried about the transition to electric vehicles, investors—and U.S. consumers turning on the lights—shouldn’t worry.

“If we shift all transport to electric than electricity demand approximately doubles…this is going to create a lot of challenges with the grid,” said Musk on Wednesday at CodeCon, a conference held at the Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills, Calif.

Now, Musk is no fool: He has built several entities worth tens or even hundreds of billions of dollars. And Tesla (ticker: TSLA) is essentially the first successful American car manufacturing start-up of the past 90 years.

But in order to make the EV revolution a reality, utilities would need to generate a lot more electrons. Cars, after all, would get their power from electric plugs instead of gas pumps.

If electricity demand doubled overnight, the U.S. might experience rolling blackouts—but that dystopian vision is impossible. It will take a generation to make a dent in the personal transportation fleet: Today, there are about 276 million cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles on U.S. roads. About 1% of them are all-electric.

Even if President Biden has his way, and 50% of new car sales in the U.S. are all-electric by 2030, the U.S. vehicle fleet might be just 15% all-electric by the end of the decade. It will take a generation or more to convert all vehicles from gas to electric power. There might be as many as 50 million all-electric vehicles on the roads by 2030, but that shouldn’t be enough to cause a electricity crisis.

Sure, we're going to shut down coal, natural gas, and nuclear power, and generate twice as much electricity from wind and solar.

Gasoline is a great power source and they want to throw it away , electricity will never catch up to it

Aside from the generation issue, is the transmission and distribution capacity and aging structure.

Isn’t a real problem transmission lines? Nobody wants Iron Trees in their back yard.

s Yeah, the environmentalist will be eager to help that happen. /s

EVs don’t make sense precisely BECAUSE their power supply does not scale with their use.

ICE and hybrids inherently scale effortlessly to meet the demand for power.

We’d probably need four times as much.

California may soon not let people have portable generators.

The current fossil-fuel delivery systems were built by private enterprise.

Musk will want the electrical grid expansion 100% funded by taxes, so he can sell more of his firetraps.

Here in the NW we generate electricity from our huge hydro dams.

The America libtards do not realize that most of the country gets electricity from the dirty coal mines they want to shut down.

Gasoline is already mostly made when it is pumped. from the ground. Electricity requires another process in order to generate it. Why they think that electricity from coal is cleaner than just using the gas that is already created is beyond me.

This is why the gibberish about “netzero” is not even as good as science fiction. Wind and solar cannot replace current energy needs no matter how many windmills we built. And then to double that to power EV’s? Not even worth talking about.

Yeah but, politicians don’t do very well with common sense, math and science (unless the science is funded by Big Pharma)

If SloJo and Obambi have their way, we will all be on bicycles, and only ‘allowed’ to bicycle around town.

The Soviet Union controlled the masses in many ways. One huuugh way was to not issue ‘papers’ to most of the populace. Papers were necessary to travel outside your own small area (county). Even if you managed to find a train or bus, you could not travel. When we eventually do not have enough energy for the EV’s, SloJo and Obambi will just mandate ‘stay in your area’ orders. Problem solved.
