Michigan lottery winner drowns with ticket still in his wallet

A Michigan man won $45,000 in a lottery game – but drowned with the ticket in his wallet before he was able to cash it.

Gregory Jarvis, 57, was at the Blue Water Inn in Caseville on Sept. 13 when he played the Club Keno add-on game “The Jack” — and hit the jackpot, WJRT of Flint reported.

“Very nice guy, he was here every day,” joint owner Dawn Talaski told the news station. “Somebody said someone just won ‘The Jack’ and he said, ‘Great,’ and someone asked him, ‘Was it you?’ and it was, so he was super excited.”

Talaski said Jarvis returned to the inn almost a week later and bought rounds of drinks, but had still not cashed his winning ticket because he didn’t have the proper documentation.

And I have 0% chance of wasting money if I don’t play.

Having said that I do play lotto and buy scratchers occasionally but like you its for entertainment value only. Like a slot machine lotto games are rigged to give you back enough to keep you coming back. There’s a reason gamblers anonymous is a thing. LOL!

“Must be a legal US resident” is printed on the ticket somewhere I’m sure.

Finding one of them must be like finding a three legged ballerina.

The few legal residents probably don't buy many tickets.

Obtaining a replacement Social Security Card is difficult and time consuming.
My friend lost his wallet with his soc. sec. card in it four weeks ago. He had to submit paperwork along with his physical drivers license/ID via mail. He is still waiting. Imagine going around without your license/ID for a month.

Depends on what the alternative use of that money is, I guess.

Is it one of those states where you have to sign the back? If so, and he had signed it, I would think that it would be considered part of his estate. If not, anyone holding the ticket would be considered the owner.

Huumm. When I replaced my out of date card it only took 10 business days - paperwork was easy, and took all of 5 minutes to complete. He should have faxed his license or submitted a photo of it, not sending his physical license.

I'm thinking more of a classic Mad Magazine two-paneller: A man cries "Good-bye, cruel world" -

I think it was Al Jaffe, and I'm pretty sure I am in possession of one of his compilation books that has that specific cartoon.

There have been cases where someone loses or misplaced their winning lottery ticket here in Texas and they won it back from the person who held it. In one case, a guy had a winning draw ticket but the unscrupulous convenience store clerk lied to him by saying it didn’t win. The clerk skipped the country, but the rightful claimant was able to produce enough evidence that he was deemed the rightful winner.

But yet, it is very difficult to establish ownership. The holder is presumed to be the owner.

Alternatively, Mr. Jarvis could have got his required info...rushed to cash in, and got into a fatal car accident on the way there...reminds me of a Gordon Lightfoot lyric...

Now I got a place
Got a worried face
And a questioning mind
Please let me know the reason
Somehow
Why some reap the harvest
And other men die
And the Joker runs wild...

The winning ticket has been handed over to Jarvis’ relatives.

Don’t Beat Me Down, 1968 by Gordon Lightfoot

When he was a man, my father would stand
I never saw him run
There wasn’t anyone could make the man bend
And the strength of his will was the tool of his trade
And he did his work well
Till the powers that be took a liking to him
And they traded his body for a cold empty shell

Don’t beat me down
Don’t beat me down
I’ve got something to say
Don’t you stand in my way
And don’t beat me down

When I was a youth, I found the truth
In the eyes of a friend
There wasn’t anyone could make the light dim
And we talked and we rambled and we gambled to win
And the learning was good
Till the powers that be to a liking to him
And they traded their fortunes for the sight of his blood

When I was a child my mother smiled
At the cradle she bought
For the little tot she held to her breast
And the song that she sang was an anthem to love
It was all that I heard
Till the powers that be took a liking to me
And they told me that love was a four-letter word

Don’t beat me down
Don’t beat me down
I’ve got one life to live
And that’s all I can give
So don’t beat me down

Now I’ve got a place, I got a worried face
And the question in mind
Please let me find a reason somehow
Why some reap the harvest while other men die
And the joker runs wild
And if powers that be take a liking to us
Then we all must return to the ways of a child
We all must return to the ways of a child

So don’t beat me down
Don’t beat me down
I’ve got something to say
Don’t you stand in my way
And don’t beat me down
I’ve got one life to live
And that’s all I can give
So don’t beat me down
Don’t beat me down
Don’t beat me down

There was a case here in Ontario of a jackpot winner who never checked her ticket and apparently lost it but because she bought it on a credit card and the store she bought it in had video surveillance the Lottery board was able to track her down close to the deadline for claiming (1 year) and gave her the good news.

Thank you...thank you for posting the all of great lyrics to a completely unknown song (popularity wise)...but thoughtful, discerning ideas. Somebody famous has to cover that song...
