Obtaining a replacement Social Security Card is difficult and time consuming. My friend lost his wallet with his soc. sec. card in it four weeks ago. He had to submit paperwork along with his physical drivers license/ID via mail. He is still waiting. Imagine going around without your license/ID for a month.

Huumm. When I replaced my out of date card it only took 10 business days - paperwork was easy, and took all of 5 minutes to complete. He should have faxed his license or submitted a photo of it, not sending his physical license.
How long ago was that? I agree when I had to replace my card back in 2003 i did thebsame as you, but it appears there are new procedures in place due to COVID.
The Social Security card does not expire.
SOC SEC in Nevada—Reno-—would NOT accept anything but the original license...NO COPY.
