U.S. Senate fails to advance debt ceiling, government funding measure: Senate Republicans Vote Down Pelosi's Debt Ceiling Bill, As Expected

WASHINGTON, Sept 27 (Reuters) - A sharply divided U.S. Senate failed on Monday to advance a measure to suspend the federal debt ceiling and avoid a partial government shutdown, as Republican lawmakers denied the bill the votes necessary to move forward.

The legislation by President Joe Biden's Democrats was aimed at beating two fast-approaching deadlines that, if left unaddressed, threaten to destabilize the U.S. economy as it struggles to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The near party-line vote of 48 votes to advance against 50 opposed fell short of the 60 votes needed to push the bill ahead in the 100-seat Senate. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer voted "no" to allow him to call another vote.

Democrats who narrowly control both chambers of Congress now have just three days to find another way to keep the government operating beyond Thursday - when current funding expires.

Republican Senator Richard Shelby predicted that lawmakers would not resolve the standoff any time soon. "Probably will be here Thursday," he told reporters.

Lawmakers also will have to figure out how to raise the debt ceiling to head off the risk of default, with independent analysts warning that the U.S. Treasury Department is likely to exhaust its borrowing authority fully sometime between Oct. 15 and Nov. 4.

Schumer, who has warned that a default would hammer the economy, said afterward that Democrats would take further action this week to avoid a government shutdown and debt default. He did not specify what the next step would be.

"Our country is now staring down the barrel of two Republican-manufactured disasters," he said on the Senate floor after the vote.

A government shutdown - or worse, a default - would be a huge hit to Biden's Democrats, who have positioned themselves as the party of responsible government

I’m sure some party spent $1.9 trillion fairly recently.

It’s a problem RINOs will paper over, for a while.

You think that our efforts to render some RINO blubber has them a bit shaken. I don't think they know what to stand for, but I think they are finally getting the message that if they are going to stand with democrats we are determined that we might as well just elect democrats and send their sorry tails home from the bar.

Three days until barricades go up at the Vietnam memorial, Gettysburg, and a host of other places.

Øbama always made shutdowns as miserable as possible for patriotic Americans and Veterans. I expect his former Veep to do the same—on steroids.

If the dems keep saying that this $3.5 trillion bill will cost $0, then why do they have to lift the debt ceiling?

This is what Mitch had the power to do under Trump.

And this is why I’ve ridden his ass so hard.

He just allowed the Democrats to rule the roost, even from
positions of minority. Ryan too...

Finally! Someone must have hit him upside the head with a
ball bat to get his attention.

Pretty low market value for RINO Blubber in the lower 48, last I heard, anyway. Not much of a Shelf Life, it turns out.//

I’m sure some party spent $1.9 trillion fairly recently.

If the Republicans were smart (they're not, but if they were), they'd have some spokesperson say they're only looking to shut the government down for two weeks to flatten the curve of democrat spending and fixate all messaging on the absolute insane levels of debt spending on liberal wishlist while abandoning the basic functions of government like a secure border, a functioning military, and an economy that can keep some chicken wings in stock at the supermarket every week.

Instead, they'll have old turkey neck warble something that might sound good in context and in long form, but doesn't condense to a three second soundbite, get wall-to-wall blame for this and as soon as they get the first scrap of a tiny sliver of a compromise, in a week they'll give up.

Why doesn't the government just run off all that unemployment money that the rest of the unemployed folks have been lapping up for the last year and a half. Maybe they can try running their agencies half occupied with outdoor office space in the parking lot.

Blahs, blah, blah shutdown. Fedgov employees get a free vacation. They always get their back pay. The only people who suffer is military personnel not receiving their sorely needed paychecks. Does anyone else ever notice any difference in their lives with these Fedov shutdowns?

At the end of the article the writer gets around to admitting the Squad is the real problem, not the Republicans.

Pretty funny.

I like that! “15 Days to Flatten the Curve of Federal Debt”! Cancel some “programs” and no retro “back-pay” either.

I remember the stories of the “Barrycades.”

Barricades at the World War II Memorial were an insult to veterans. Isn’t the memorial a walk though memorial, with no federal employees? Just spiteful on Obama’s part, and Joseph Stolen is even worse.

I also remember seeing a story online at the time of American patriots carting off the barricades and dumping them in front of the White House gates, with a sign on them, “Return to Sender.”
