Fourteen Mexican soldiers were detained for several hours on Saturday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents after crossing into the El Paso, Texas.
"Just after midnight today CBP officers working at the Bridge of the America's international crossing in El Paso noted two Mexican military vehicles crossing the boundary and entering the U.S.," CBP said in a statement provided to Reuters.
As the news service reported, the soldiers said they did not realize they had crossed the border. CBP secured their weapons and equipment for "safety and processing," and Mexican military leadership was also contacted.
Due to the incident, the border was reportedly closed for two hours. One witness told Reuters that the soldiers were led away in handcuffs.
Though most of the soldiers were processed uneventfully, one was issued a civil penalty for having a personal-use amount of marijuana with him, according to Reuters.
All the soldiers and their belongings were reportedly returned to Mexico before 5 a.m. on Saturday morning.
The southern border has recently received international attention due to the large influx of Haitian migrants who crossed into the U.S. Thousands have since been returned to Haiti or traveled back to Mexico in order to avoid authorities.

5 Palestinians killed in clashes with Israeli troops Images and video of CBP agents riding on horseback and apparently using whips on the migrants resulted in international outcry.
"I can’t imagine the situation where that would be appropriate," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said last week when asked about the images.
The Department of Homeland Security has opened an investigation into the reported use of whips.
Is this the second group ?
None of the Mehican soldiers named Pancho Villa, by any chance?
“”Thousands have since been returned to Haiti or traveled back to Mexico in order to avoid authorities. “”
Who believes this?
Would still love to find out how the Haitians walked here.
Their GPS must be a little off....
Government sanctioned mules and drug runners.
Yeah, the one million brown people was no big deal. But you let a few thousand blacks in and that makes the headlines.
and yes that is sarcasm.
I was detained briefly in El Paso twice in 79/80. Once by the Border Patrol :)
Democrats have always been warm to returning territory to Mexico. El Paso, parts of New Mexico, chunks of Arizona, and even Colorado. Our corridor from El Paso to San Antonio is comprised mostly of immigrants and new voting citizens. Eric Holder a master maestro in orchestrating that.
Open Borders is supported by the current Congressional Representative, Veronica Escobar. Her staff has advised refugees -in-waiting how to respond to Border Patrol. Beto O’Rourke will run for Governor and is Open Borders. But…my point being, why not? Why not start moving troops in (by mistake) to the interior? All kinds of strategic benefits await.
It’s getting worrisome. El Paso has been a great place to live over the years.
Never been there so I don't how easy it is to accidentally cross the border. Isn't there a water body in that area that separates the two countries?
Columbus, New Nexico!😁
On their feet, after stepping onto the tarmac at Aeropuerto Internacional de la Ciudad de México.
Heading over to Fabens for a good steak.
