Supply crisis: 'Catastrophic' panic buying of fuel 'going to get worse', says industry expert

UK - Panicked motorists have caused lengthy queues at petrol stations for a second day - as an industry expert predicted the "catastrophic situation" is going to get worse before it improves.

Long lines of cars continued to form at forecourts across the country on Saturday after a shortage of HGV drivers forced some fuel retailers to shut their pumps and ration sales.

The petrol problems come after retailers warned a solution to the lack of truckers must be found within days to avoid "significant disruption" in the run-up to Christmas.

Sky News understands that Boris Johnson has allowed minsters to relax immigration rules and up to 5,000 temporary visas could be issued to foreign lorry drivers.

Brian Madderson, chairman of the Petrol Retailers Association, described the panic buying as a "catastrophic situation" and said he had witnessed queues up to a mile long at forecourts.

He told Sky News: "There's enough fuel at the refineries and terminals to supply the normal demand.

"What we have at the moment is abnormal demand where everyone is rushing to fill up their vehicles."

He added: "It is a crisis situation that has developed very quickly."

"I think this situation is going to get worse before it gets better," he added.

Shortages are an integral part of a “progressive” country.

Maybe Boris can ask Slow Joe to beg our Ay-Rab friends some more.

What if there were a panic that no one knew about?

How many people read the headline and thought “gosh, maybe I should tank up?” ?

Our “petrol” is expensive and going higher thanks to Biden.

How long until rationing? This time with shootings every few minutes in some line of cars somewhere. Last time (1970s) it was just swearing and kicking down the Out of Gas signs.

People are much less patient in 2021. Even over fast food drive thrus.

We just bought a Rav4 Prime, plug in hybrid, with a 42 mile range on electric only. In the seven weeks we have had it, we have not burned an ounce of gasoline. Almost everything we need is within five miles. At current prices of gas and electricity, electricity costs half what gasoline does.

Wow. Just got home. I read your post and got to thinking and I then raced out to buy a full tank. Just ahead of some other FReepers. Gas station raised the price 80 cents a gallon as the manager saw the long line of cars.

Kidding.

During the 1970s shortages Erma Bombeck has a column where she said she tried to buy gas for her car by giving the manager a lovely set of steak knives and a Rand McNally Road Atlas in deluxe binding.

To the very young here: Gas stations used to try for customers by giving portions of dinnerware and other gifts each week as customers bought fillups. As well as gift stamps that went into little booklets to accumulate and then trade for things like lamps, card tables and other fabulous things.

#6: "People are much less patient in 2021. Even over fast food drive thrus."

The only way to solve this is to get the native tribesmen riled up. Slow Joey will then get down on his knees begging systemic forgiveness, and then open up the spigots. Wait in line for gas? Dey don'ts have time for dat s***.

The way Biden has tanked the economy, you know the Swamp People are squirming in their seats about the upcoming mid-terms. That's gonna leave a mark!

Happy for you.

I heard a right wing local host say his friend tried to rent a gas engine car at Enterprise and they had only electrics. The few others were rented earlier. He said “Where can I charge this (about 100 mile trip one way for his business meetings). Answer was there is at least one parking structure there with charging stations.

But further, the host said “When you own one and the battery goes bad eventually you have to register that you are properly disposing of it due to emissions as it decomposes otherwise. They track so you can’t toss it into the woods near the highway yourself.”
Then....
I can’t tell the exact number but it sounded like the disposal fee was ten thousand dollars from a service that buries them properly. Couldn’t hear the figure he said.

Does anyone know about this? Was he right (not politically)?

As a single guy in the service at the time, I really didn’t need a set of salad bowls.

Not that I actually know anything about this, but I would think that a dead EV battery would be recycled to reclaim the lithium.

Funny.

You might have considered filling each of the bowls with something from the basic junk food groups. Fatty, salty, greasy, sugary and so on. Balanced. Keep each bowl filled and with a beverage in reach you are ready for TV.

At 5 miles a trip or less, electric makes sense..

We are keeping our tanks topped off because you just know its coming here. My sister texted me that there’s another TP shortage on the way. I texted her a pic of our stash in the garage. 😆

I agree it may be cheaper to putt putt around town but that vehicle costs a lot of money for a mostly local drive around.

We bought a 30mpg car and rarely drive the F150 now. I’m almost disappointed that gas hasn’t gone higher. ROI is going to take a few years now.
