A buddy of mine was in the Air Force Security Forces during his administration. He worked a missile site at the time and they would have to post guys in observation posts, looking over the silos.
They drove Chevy Blazers. They were allowed to run the engines to keep warm. Had to go out there with their sleeping bags and cold weather gear while they pulled duty. Said it was absolutely miserable. I guess the high desert in Wyoming can get quite cold in the winter.

I worked for a car rental company in the summer of ‘79. I got paid minimum wage to sit in gas lines all day. We did swap plates out to keep the fleet full of gas. Our business was booming because a customer could rent a car that was full of gas and they didn’t have to wait in a gas line.
