President Joe Biden on Friday signed an executive order adding measles to a list of communicable diseases that could require quarantine after several Afghan refugees were diagnosed with the highly contagious disease after arriving in the United States.
The action makes measles one of the diseases for which federal health authorities have the authority to issue quarantine orders requiring people who have been diagnosed with measles or exposed to it to self-isolate to protect public health, a White House official said in a statement.
"This action was taken at the request of public health officials, who cited the cases of measles among Afghans who recently arrived in the U.S. as well as several previous outbreaks of measles in recent years," the official added, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The statement did not give details on the nature or length of the quarantine.
Measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), meaning it was no longer constantly present. Thirteen cases of measles were confirmed in the United States in 2020.
Flights carrying Afghan refugees to the United States were temporarily paused because of four cases of measles, the White House said last week.
"All arriving Afghans are required to get vaccinated for measles, as well as for diseases like polio and COVID-19, as a condition of remaining in the United States," the official said.
Afghans are being vaccinated at military bases overseas before they fly to the United States.
Afghans who were diagnosed with measles after arriving in the United States "have been housed separately in accordance with public health guidelines," and CDC has been conducting contact tracing, the official said.

We got shots for those back in the 1950s I think it was. Didn’t matter, I had both sets of them. The German and the ones we called the little measles. Didn’t die. Didn’t do anything except get the red spots and stayed home from school for a few days.
That has already been the case with Measles.
I had the measles as a kid. I remember everything I ate tasted horrible except soup. The light hurt my eyes and I was very tired. Other than that it didn’t last long.
It was very itchy!
Measles, among an unvaccinated population, would make Covid look like a Sunday walk. But we actually came up with a vaccine that stopped it dead in its tracks.
The measles isn’t a coronavirus. It doesn’t mutate every time it reproduces.
Real vaccines tend to be good for the population.
Quarantines are not the purview of the Federal government. This was settled law in 1905. Why does Biden continue to set himself up for failure?

The Afghan strain or the Haitian strain?
Measles has always been a quarantinable disease at the state level. What is the point of a redundant federal act?
Except as a CYA because they brought in a bunch of sick refugees and they have to look like they are taking responsible actions.

I was 4 when my slightly older brother and I were sick with the measles. We were quarantined together, and only mom was allowed to bring us food and take our temps, etc. Like you, I remember light hurting my eyes. All I did was sleep for days. I remember I felt like crap. When I finally was better, I woke up to find my brother playing already. Maybe he got it first. I tagged along with him at every opportunity those days. I’m sure I was a pest. I do think Mama made us fried chicken when we were well enough to eat more than a few bites of food. Mmm, mmm, mmm, her fried chicken was the BEST!
We were quarantined when my family caught Whooping Cough. I was a small child and I remember it being very rough going.
If we had only gotten the vaccine, we coulda skipped it. But today’s experimental MessengerRNA gene therapy sequences are no vaccines.
