Daniil Medvedev won his first grand slam title Sunday, beating Novak Djokovic 6-4 6-4 6-4 in the US Open final and ending the world No. 1's hopes of completing a calendar grand slam.
The 25-year-old Medvedev, playing in his third grand slam final, became the third Russian man to win a major singles title and the ninth different US Open men's singles champion of the last 14 years. After his victory, he thanked friends, family and fans for giving him energy throughout the week. He ended his speech by wishing his wife a happy anniversary. "During the tournament I couldn't think of a present or anything, but if I lose I have to think of a present," Medvedev said.
"I didn't expect to be here at all," Emma Raducanu, the women's champion told reporters after her win. "I mean, I think my flights were booked at the end of qualifying, so it's a nice problem to have. "I'm just really enjoying the experience. Out there on the court today, I was saying to myself: 'This could be the last time you play on Ashe, so might as well just go for it and enjoy everything.' "I didn't compete for 18 months, but here I am, and it just shows that if you believe in yourself, then anything is possible." Remarkably, Raducanu is yet to drop a set in her eight matches at the US Open -- five in the main draw and three in qualifying -- and is the first qualifier in history to reach the final four at Flushing Meadows.

Too bad, I really liked Djokovic .......................
Novak had a really bad day - I wouldn’t be surprised if his unforced errors were more than any other day he’s ever had.
Medvedev played well.
Had Novak had a good day, this would probably have gone to five sets.
I’m glad Emma won.
Too bad, I really liked Djokovic .......................
He is a great player. Maybe the best. But there is something about him that turns me off. I felt that way about Nadal but then realized it was the language barrier. Federer has always been a likable guy. As a tennis player who now has time to watch most of the matches they are all great.
Emma was more gracious in victory than her opponent would have been, who came across to me as someone who seeks adulation.
The joker is indeed one of the best tennis player ever. But no one can win for ever. It is OK to lose sometimes. The winning record will stay for ever.
I understand throwing a fit when a player uses a medical emergency to disrupt the flow. It’s a technique that some of the winning players use. The Greek came under fire for his long bathroom breaks.
But Emma had blood streaming down her leg. She obviously couldn’t continue until fixed.
It probably did disrupt the flow because it changed after the time out. But a champion knows how to deal with time outs.
yes, The Fernandez girl made somewhat of a spectacle of herself during the awards ceremony. I felt like I was watching a teen drama - which of course is exactly what it was! Emma seemed impossibly perfect in her role - what rival wouldn't be jealous?
I’m glad that Naomi Osaka was defeated early on. Love seeing the woke suffer.
yes, I loved seeing Osaka get knocked out early by Leylah Fernandez. But I felt the same way watching Naomi O. take down the obnoxious Serena Williams 3 years ago - it was wonderful at the time. It didn't take Naomi long to become the obnoxious villain herself, blaming everyone else for racism and now for being mean bullies. So sad. However, it seems she doesn't really have the mental makeup for being the nasty villain (unlike Serena).
There is so much great young talent on the women’s side. But Raducanu seems truly special.
