Sen. Chuck Schumer on Sunday called on Congress to spend $33 million on upgrading the systems that help forecasters predict extreme weather after the remnants of Hurricane Ida caught local officials off guard earlier this month.
“What we saw with Hurricane Ida and what we see more and more is that storms change rapidly, varying in course, rainfall and other factors — and we need to keep up with all of it in real time,” said Schumer (D-NY) in a statement.
The senator is also seeking $3 million in federal funds for upgrades to the Empire State’s system to allow for “sharper” forecasts.
Ida walloped the area earlier this month with flash flooding, killing 18 people in the Big Apple and 27 in New Jersey.

I was very impressed with the forecast of Ida.
Weather is what it is. We knew where it was going. Can we do better?? Don’t think so...Mother Nature never sends us her Mapquest Route.

Maybe he should talk to the people that write the computer models for global warming / climate change. I’m sure they could tweak a little here and there to satisfy him. /s

NYC needs a good roto rootering.....
Maybe that money would be better spent repairing “gaping holes” in the walls of basement apartments so they don’t get flooded. Or upgrade the storm water system. Those things seem more important than predicting things a little better. After all, if there was an exact rainfall number ahead of time, what would have been done differently?
Just out of curiosity, did the rain in NYC trip any of those milestones such as “100 year storm?”
The government solution to all problems is to throw money at it.

More people died in the NYC/NJ area during Ida than in LA.
People drowned in their basement apartments.

Are they really trying to say they had no idea of what was coming despite it hitting every place along its route from Louisiana, ESPECIALLY Philadelphia?
No amount of money is going to overcome the ignorance of the staff and management of New York City emergency management. Who could sit there an not know, especially with the flooding in Philadelphia, that they weren't going to get hit?
Who failed to clear the garbage from storm drains in the days leading up to the rainfall?
Who let the subway trains with passengers continue to run?
weather is inherently unpredictable. Last December they called for snow maybe 6 inches, we got 3 feet in upstate NY. So we plowed it, dealt with it. People need to just stick their head out the basement window every now and again when we have weather events.
Gee, New York gets a rainstorm and suddenly, hurricanes matter!
They are no longer a solely redneck, flyover country problem.
I followed the storm track for Ida. The forecasters were right on the money with the tools they already have. Hurricanes happen.
Walking outside and looking around would improve their forecasts and that costs nothing.
