I'm Glad George W. Bush Was President on 9/11. Just Imagine the Alternatives.

In watching various 9/11 retrospectives in the weeks leading up to the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, I keep coming back to one thought: Thank God George W. Bush was president, and not the enfeebled Joe Biden or the mendacious Barack Obama. It’s hard to even imagine how much worse those awful days following the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon would have been without the steady hand of Bush, who was at the time just seven months into his presidency.

One documentary I watched last week has Bush recounting that terrible day, moment by moment, beginning with his routine morning jog. He described his feelings upon being told by chief of staff Andy Card that America was under attack as he sat listening to children reading in a Sarasota, Fla., school. “I’m sitting in the midst of a classroom with little kids, listening to a children’s story and I realize I’m the commander in chief and the country has just come under attack,” he later recalled. For just a moment, his face betrayed shock, but Bush quickly regained his composure, allowing storytime to continue for another eight or nine minutes so as not to frighten the children with an abrupt departure. One can only imagine the emotions that were running through his mind at that moment: fear, anger, uncertainty, disbelief—the same ones the rest of us were feeling, but with the addition of the great weight of his responsibility.

He faced that moment like a man, standing before the children and teachers at the school, appearing cool and composed, and speaking directly to the American people...

I wish we had a scoreboard, or an index, to give scores or grades to presidents, similar to how groups such as the American Conservative Union give ratings to members of Congress for their votes on issues. If we did such ratings, Bush would definitely have some lower scores on some issues, but would still be far ahead of the Gores and Kerrys of the world, on many issues of importance to conservatives.

We have a historian here (LS) at FR, we should develop one ourselves. We should rank recent Presidents. I read all about those rankings developed by current historians but they are always biased, of course. It would be interesting to see how Dubya would fare after a honest assessment. He is hated by the Left and the Right. But how effective was his Presidency?

The Media and NYT are definitely accomplices, but Bush is the one who stopped us from getting him. Bush chickened out and MANY died as a result.

Dubya turned out to be a phony socialist medium-done Leftist like his dad.

Allowing the EU to engineer the 2008 fiscal crisis should tell you all you need to know about Bush’s presidency. Never mind allowing the liberal media to shape his prosecution of the war.

The world would have been a better place if Reagan would have selected Paul Laxalt or Jack Kemp as VP. Unfortunately the cabal forced Poppy Bush on us and we were stuck with that odious family of globalist, Deep State, New World Order lackeys.
Nothing but leftist tools with a veneer of patriotism and Christianity to fool
enough flyover country voters.

I voted for Bush in 1992, but now I wish Perot had won.

If Perot had won, the result would've been something similar to what we saw in 2016 and thereafter - total resistance to the winning "outsider" candidate by the Uniparty.

It would've probably been less effective, though, as the internet was still confined to university and government nodes and social media was still far down the road. Yeah -a "what if..." for the ages.

The last Republican who was able to beat the narrative by the Liberal Media was Ronald Reagan. If it was not for 9/11, Dubya would had been an one term President.

I suspect you’re correct. Ultimately, he was indistinguishable from the Democrats who endlessly vilified him, and still is.

Al Gore would have been president if not for that Florida recount. I wonder if there would even have been a 9/11 if Bush wasn’t president? Was 9/11 personal?

Just in general, on this site nowadays, we are supposed to hate Bush. That’s the tone of every thread about Bush. Some say they regret voting for him. They wish they could go back in time and change their votes. As if they would really prefer Al Gore or John Kerry had won elections against Bush?

You don't get it. There is no difference Between Bush, Gore & Kerry:

Nobody could seriously want Kerry. Buchanan was better than Bush, which l suppose implies that Bush wasn't much better than Gore.

First problem: could anybody really know that at the time? Second problem: abortion, which seems to be what people vote on most of the time.

Would Gore really have been different from Bush on foreign policy? Would he really have avoided the financial crash? And would he have been as gung ho on climate change as he was after he'd been out of office for a few years and needed a new grift?

In 2000 number two was McCain.

It wasn’t until after 2010 that their true nature became clean when they didn’t do anything about healthcare or the IRS. It was just lip service and the quest for cushy jobs.

>> Democrats wanted war too, they just played being opposed to it, because a Pubbie was in the White House. <<

I make a similar argument when the anti-17th amendment crowd goes around sneering "If abolishing the 17th amendment is soooo bad, why are the RATS opposed to it?"

They're opposed to it because a bunch of useful idiots on "our side" are the ones pushing for it.

If the dopes on "our side" actually got their way and were SUCCESSFUL in repealing the 17th amendment, the RATS would LOVE it: A bunch of career state government politicians in cushy gerrymandered "safe Democrat" seats would be able to appoint ANY crooked socialist hack they wanted to a lifetime tenure in the nation's highest legislative body.

Yeah, no. I fought against the idea that he knew of or was part of 9/11 for years. I was a huge critic of that idea. I was wrong. Over time it has become clear that he either knew it was coming or it served some purpose and was allowed to happen or (much worse) made it happen. I no longer trust anything.

I haven’t gone that far down the list. W would definitely be in the bottom 10. I would give him high marks for his first week’s response to al-Qaeda. After that, it’s steadily downhill.

Remember, the bottom three spots are easy: Biteme, Zero, Carter, then you’ve got winners like Buchanan, Van Buren, GHWB, Johnson, FDR near the bottom.
