Legislation to restrict the use of gas-powered landscaping equipment in California also would outlaw portable generators in a state only a year removed from rolling power outages amid deadly heat.
Should Newsom sign the bill, which cleared the California State Legislature on Thursday, it could ban another gas-powered necessity: portable generators.
The Portable Generator Manufacturers’ Association warned AB 1346 could lead to a ban on the sale of portable generators in California as soon as 2024.
“No matter how well-intentioned this bill might be, it makes a critical error in equating portable generators with other small off-road engine equipment,” said Joseph Harding, technical director of PGMA.
The final amendment of the legislation asks the California Air Resources Board to consider the feasibility of a generator or emergency response phaseout based on the availability of zero-emission options but puts no restriction on banning the machines. A legislative analysis of the bill said generators were the highest source of pollution from SOREs in California.

Portable generators have many uses other than a backup to grid power. They’re used on almost every jobsite to run power tools, air compressors, lighting, pumps, fans. It is simply infeasible to ban the use of common construction tools.

I just fired my gas generator today. I should have run it longer.
There are two simple options.
1. Ban new construction
2. Just plug the compressor into the wall that you’re building.
From my cold dead hands!
Newsom is just a stooge, who are the radicals proposing this BS? They’re the ones who need to be exposed and outed!
“It is simply infeasible to ban the use of common construction tools.”
Never underestimate the perfidy of the left, especially the morons running Commiefornia in to the ground.
Unfortunately, here in California we have Spare-The-Air days that forbid burning and ban operation of portable gas-powered equipment. That was the case last weekend for Labor Day in the SF Bay Area when a Spare-The-Air alert was issued. My neighbors continued using their barbecues and use of their lawn mowers, and we all mentioned not to rat out anyone. Democrats are nuts.
It won’t affect anything except for the things we commoners use or need. Hospitals, schools and whatever other entities are connected to the government can do what they want.
Punish anyone who is not dependent on the government for something.
Can you say Fascism?
Excuse me sir, but do you a burn permit. Where’s you regulation burn pit? Has it been permitted, inspected, and installed by a state approved contractor?
We’re sorry to inform you that we have to fine you. Of course it will have to torn down by a state approved contractor, with a permit, then you can apply for the proper permits to allow you to build another one.
That is, after you provide us with an environmental impact study, a study on fire safety, and of course a fire suppression system.
I would think that the cops seeing lights on in a blackout might be an easier way to identify who is using an illegal generator.
I think they also mandated solar panels be installed
Wouldn’t be surprised.
Anything to drive the cost of buying a home down... /s
Don't be silly you can just use electric generators powered by solar panels. It is the Kalifornia way.
This would essentially put hollywood out of business. See all those generators at movie shoots?
1. That will kill the RV industry.....
2. When power goes out & water to livestock depends on generator to pump from the well-—Ranchers/farmers should sue Calif out of existence
3. Irrigation pumps depend on “donkey engines or generators.
Power outages==back up generators for hospitals-—police—fire stations, etc.
When the 1994 earthquake severely damaged the Santa Monica freeway, the construction company-—C C Meyers-—worked 24/7 to restore the roads. They used the large klieg lights that movie sets use.
C C Finished that job ahead of deadline & spread the bonus to all of his workers.
