Lou Fischler thought he’d finally nailed down a deal with his 25-year-old son on the coronavirus vaccine. The dad would co-sign a loan — if the son would get the shot.
“I told him, ‘Look, you can get this Johnson & Johnson vaccine,” Fischler said. “It’s one shot and you’re done.’ I just really wanted to protect him.”
But when Fischler started searching Orlando clinics and pharmacies for the single-dose vaccine, it seemed almost no one had it.
In fact, what was once seen as the conquering hero of the COVID-19 battle — a one-and-done wonder that needed only standard refrigeration — has become increasingly scarce throughout the state.
Dr. Raul Pino, the state health officer for Orange County, said he hasn’t been able to order more J&J through the Florida Department of Health for weeks. Neither has Seminole County, nor Volusia, Lake or Osceola. Publix doesn’t carry it, nor does any Walmart from Melbourne to The Villages. Mobile clinics and homeless outreach workers, who once used it exclusively, report they can’t get it either.
“At this time, the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine is unavailable nationally for ordering,” said Megan Moran, deputy communications director for the Florida Department of Health.
According to records from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Florida isn’t alone. Few additional doses of J&J vaccine have made their way to the states since mid-June, despite reassurances from both public health authorities and the manufacturer that the vaccine is considered extremely safe and highly effective at keeping people from dying of COVID-19.
“It was a good option for us with our unsheltered folks,” said Dewey Wooden, director of behavioral health for the Health Care Center for the Homeless, which has been leading the vaccination effort at Central Florida shelters and homeless camps.

THIS COULD BE THE REASON:
* A little over 14 million Americans have received the J&J vaccine to date. Meanwhile, 65 million people had gotten both doses of Moderna, and 85 million had received two doses of Pfizer, which has already been approved for a third dose for people who are immunocompromised.
* In April, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued what turned out to be a 12-day “pause” in the vaccine’s use after a rare blood-clotting disorder developed in six women who got the shots. Ultimately the agency discovered only 17 cases, including three that resulted in death, but ruled the vaccine’s benefits outweighed the risk.
* The FDA also added a warning to doctors on how to treat the condition — and a warning to women under age 50, especially, that they should be aware of the possibility.
* Errors at a Baltimore contractor site led to the FDA ordering 60 million doses of the vaccine destroyed.
* Then came concerns that the J&J vaccine had lower efficacy rates than its two-dose counterparts, although that turned out to be largely unfounded. Yes, the single-dose vaccine was less effective at protecting against mild COVID-19 infection, but it held up well when it counted.
Real-world data, including a recently reported study of 500,000 frontline healthcare workers in South Africa, found the J&J vaccine has been 95% effective in preventing death due to COVID-19 involving the highly contagious delta variant.
Fauci and his friends own shares in Pfizer and Moderna, not J&J.
RE: Fauci and his friends own shares in Pfizer and Moderna, not J&J.
I’ve owned shares in J&J since the 1990’s and this has been one of my best investment decisions yet. The share price and dividends have been steady even during the lawsuits the company went through.
Only by sheer luck and fortitude, on the way back to drop her off resigned to give up the search we passed by a Vons grocery store that had a pharmacy in back. What the heck, let's pull in and check. The pharmacist said she had one dose left. But when we tried to sign up, she checked her computer and said "sorry, it expired 20 minutes ago". LOL. However, she said she had more vials in the fridge and just didn't want to open a new one at the end of the day. We made an appointment for 9 am the next morning and the woman got her shot.
Father of the Year right there, I tell ya.
There is a vaccine finder website. https://www.vaccines.gov/search/
J&J can be specified. It will list all the locations in a 25 or 50 mile area that has it. Then follow up calls will find 1/2 don’t, they were used. The other half have them. Usually small pharmacies.
I just hit the site for several zipcodes. It’s out there. You just have to know this procedure.
All that drama surrounding the J&J vaccine, especially with Fauci pulling it off the market for a few weeks, made me think it is probably the best of the three.
Data from J&J, while internal data and not peer reviewed, state that the J&J immunity against the Delta variant is very strong, and that overall immunity lasts up to 8 months. Compared to Pfizer, which becomes very weak 5 weeks after the 2nd jab, that would be something if it were true.
Biden and Harris both excoriated Trump about “not telling the truth” and “not enough transparency” but what we have now is far far worse. Nobody knows which vaccine is best for them, which ones are best against variants, how long the ‘immunity’ lasts, or whether it is safer or better to mix and match 2 of the jabs. Biden is just issuing edicts from Delaware and giving far less information about vaccine efficacy. And they are pushing ‘booster’ shots without even having any good data published - to the point that the top two people at the FDA biologics division quit in protest over political interference with the agency.
And if you ask me, the FDA rushed the approval of the Pfizer vaccine through knowing full well it is probably the weakest and least effective of those available in the USA. Even Pfizer admits they made their formula to be “weak” because of fear of adverse events. Makes absolutely zero scientific sense at all to have given that one full approval.
Nothing says father of the year like bribing your son to take an experimental.
If I were to get a shot, I will not get an mRNA shot. J&J is the only shot in IS that isn’t mRNA
Bkmk
Huh? Even among those >70 years old, the death rate from Covid is under 4%
The only “medication” that comes without disclosures and warnings. And it’s being forced.
Yes, and exponentially less threatening with the younger demos.
One of the vaxxes developed using cells grown from a pre-born baby murdered in the 1960s. In this case, the cell line is known as ‘PER.C6’.
Yes, I’d be inclined to take that vax...
...when Hell freezes over!
My Army son-in-law just got the J&J after being mandated/ordered to do so..
This has come up before. Not a single one of those cells are in any of the injections.
The line is used to generate cells, but even those are not in the injection. The material in the injection are not cells at all. That vaccine is viral vector, and viruses are not cells. And this case they derive from the line. It’s quite a intellectual distance between the fetus cells and what material is in the injection.
Thank you. I am flying back to the States next month and my plan is to get the J&J while I am there - not so much because I believe in the vaccine but so I can document I’ve had the shot (I already had COVID in January) and I don’t want Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca jacking around with my DNA.
Got the J&J in June. Now have tinnitus so loud it wakes me up at night.
Regrets.
I got the moderna in March and April. Already have tinnitus for years but last night it was loud, like some sort of engine running somewhere but in a muffled way. Took a while to fall asleep for sure. Only started once my head hit the pillow, that’s when I always hear it regularly, too.
