I, however, love him for it.

I think I’m going to find a biography of Lee and perhaps a portrait for framing. He can live in my house anytime.
The problem with many Civil War era figures comes because history cannot separate the civil war from slavery.
However, I believe that many historical figures, including Jefferson, Robert E. Lee and many others need to be looked at for their whole life, for all their contributions, and not just banishing them from history for their faults alone, and not by taking their faults out of the context of their own times, in which many of their faults were not universally recognized as such; making them not perfect, but just human, imperfect as we all are.
Lee’s post Civil War record was exemplary, and it should be so recognized. And as for his military leadership I think he was second in the first 100 years of U.S. history to only George Washington. Lee was the Confederacy’s great advantage, but Lincoln had all the other advantages.
Lee’s problem was also his honest character. He was loyal to the land and people of his forefathers, Virginia, and that loyalty could not separate him from them.
If Virginians were intellectually honest today, they’d still honor Lee as one of their greats, warts and all.
Thank you Donald Trump. Lee was the greatest American since Washington.
