Idaho hospitals begin rationing health care amid COVID surge

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho public health leaders announced Tuesday that they activated “crisis standards of care” allowing health care rationing for the state's northern hospitals because there are more coronavirus patients than the institutions can handle.

The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare quietly enacted the move Monday and publicly announced it in a statement Tuesday morning — warning residents that they may not get the care they would normally expect if they need to be hospitalized.

The media will blame this on people who refuse to mask or get vaccinated. They won’t ask what the hospitals did with all the government money and time to build capacity for covid patients that they didn’t use. You can’t magically make doctors appear out of nowhere overnight, but you can train a nurse in 18 months, especially if you start with some CNAs and LPNs and offer them a big cash bonus to train and increase their earning potential.

As of Sunday, there were 160 patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in an ICU, according to data from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare — and data often is under-reported on weekends. During the pandemic’s previous high point in December, the peak number of COVID-19 ICU patients was 122.
