My ex was in the USAF in the’70s, and I got the biggest kick out of the wives, especially wives of career men. They thought their husbands’ ranks were their ranks, and they observed a certain pecking order among themselves.
He was in for four years and I never did figure out the whole ranking system. Other wives sure did; their husbands’ ranks were their whole identities.

We had a Wing Commander that was nothing like Vindman. One day he climbed down from the cockpit, leaned on wing fuel tank, and lit a cigarette while he spoke with his crew chief. One of the enlisted guys called him on it in the base newspaper. The Commander admittted wrong-doing, and commended the enlisted guy for calling him on it.A couple of years later, there was a banquet in one of the maintenance hangars. It was getting off to a slow start and every smoker in the building was dying. No way was anyone going to light a smoke in there. Then the Wing Commander’s wife broke down and lit a cigarette. Within thirty seconds there were a couple of dozen people smoking.
And just how did he earn all those medals. What a joke.
