The incoming Biden team REFUSED to meet with outgoing Trump team to discuss / learn what the Afghanistan exit plan was, what strategic conditions were agreed upon and what was already in place. They wanted nothing to do with anything Trump had planned or done. The resulting cluster**** is the result strictly political posturing and America is / will suffer for it. What the heck is Biden and his group of merry men doing still in office????
From everything I've read on the topic, Bagram had reached the point where it could not be readily defended with such a small force of military personnel in Afghanistan. The airport is something like 25 miles north of Kabul, and the logistics -- and dangers -- of evacuating thousands of people out of Kabul over that distance was pretty much impossible with such a small armed force in the country.
This one is all on Biden, not his military advisors.

My suspicion is that a perfectly reasonable plan to hold Baghram with the 2,500 troops in country, bolstered by the Afghani army who would have had continued logistical support, was presented to Xiden. His puppeteers said “No, that’s Trump’s plan!” and instructed SlowJoe to stomp his feet, demand a reduction down to 700 troops, and GTFO before his planned 9/11 victory dance. Heck, it probably involved rotating in units with the necessary skill set - maybe even a surge - and that was totally unacceptable to whomever is actually running this country.
Whether milley said stay or go about Bagram Airfield, slow joe and his political cohorts, made the final decision to go.
If milley said stay, then he should have resigned, if he said go, then he should be fired.
That asshole should be gone, regardless of his past advice.
