Isis in Africa: far from Afghanistan, the world is losing another war on terror

Joe Biden has argued that the terrorist threat from groups such al Qaeda and Isis has spread from Afghanistan to other parts of the world, including the African continent. In justifying his withdrawal of all US troops from Kabul he declared last week: “There’s a greater danger from Isis and al Qaeda and all these affiliates in other countries by far than there is from Afghanistan.”

Despite this, there are serious questions over the international community’s commitment to fighting terrorism on the African continent.

Jihadists are active and committing atrocities across Africa – but the signs from France suggest Western forces are beginning to pull out from there as well, withdrawing troops from Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and Chad.

Instability is already emerging. France withdrew from Mali after the country experienced its second coup within a single year. The G5 Sahel Joint Force, a multinational military force from the five African nations affected, also shows signs of waning.

This week, UN counterterrorism chief Vladimir Voronkov, presented a report on Isis and related groups, calling for a coordinated global response to turn back the tide in Africa.

It is “urgently needed to support the efforts of African countries and regional organisations to counter terrorism and address its interplay with conflict, organised crime, governance and development gaps,” he said.

Isis in the Greater Sahara has killed hundreds of civilians since the beginning of the year in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, according to the report. Eighty people alone died following an extremist attack in northern Burkina Faso on 18 August.

President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria has called on the West to offer more help “Africa’s fight against terror is the world’s fight.” But he added that more than just military assistance was needed.

It’s not the world’s war against Islam.

It is Islam’s war against the world.

It’s the Islamic mandate......convert the world ...by force if necessary and of course they’re willing to do that.

What has not been learned by our leaders is that you don’t win a war by occupying and nation building. You either go in and kick their ass to the point that they don’t dream of attacking you -or- you go in and subjugate the entire population, teaching them English, replacing their religion and teaching them to be good “Americans”.
