After months of supposed hiding, the Capitol Hill cop who shot unarmed pro-Trump protestor Ashli Babbitt at the Capitol, Lt. Michael Byrd has come out of the woodwork to talk about his shooting, in a softball interview with NBC's Lester Holt.
Which is weird stuff, given that for months his identity had been concealed, by investigators, Congress, and other supposed watchdogs, on the grounds that revealing it to angry Trump supporters was too dangerous, and whose investigative conclusions excused him from accountability.
Now he's come out -- telling Lester Holt of his great heroics. He doesn't even need to, having been exonerated repeatedly.
The most likely reason is this lawsuit, and these efforts by Babbitt's family to get answers:
Babbitt’s family is suing for the identity of the officer to be publicly released but so far that effort has not borne fruit. They are also filing a $10 million wrongful death lawsuit, claiming the officer didn’t issue a verbal command according to the Washington Examiner.
A lawsuit would concentrate anyone's mind, even in the name of his agency, making it quite likely that he would think of preparing a defense.
It's a typical lawyer tactic, when it can be done and a judge doesn't slap it down, to try to sway public opinion, particularly when a defense is weak
Holt, who's no stranger to political water-carrying, would be the perfect such vehicle.
The problem here is that the effort has probably already backfired.
Byrd, who makes north of $100,000 a year as a Capitol Police lieutenant, comes off as a dumb goober, a flatfoot in any other police department, a classic Parkinson's law case of a man promoted to his level of incompetence.
After all, he has a history of mishandling weapons

A distraction from the Kabul massacre.
Or vice versa.
I’d like to hear some video proving he was racially taunted and that people were saying they wanted to cut off his head.
Yes. It was the Minneapolis cop. Got my BLM riots confused.
Poor sod was put out there by Dem CCP Operatives. I wonder how ling it will be before the usual FBI hitmen take him out and a Trump voter patsy is framed?
I think they’re also deliberately doing it to send us a message. We can do this to you with impunity and you better not forget it.
You never will— this a@@clown is “veteran” campus cop with limited intellect who strikes a lot of people as “al sharpton” with a badge. Knee jerk.... because “racism” which is not even the correct word.
Flipped the other way— would a white capitol cop shoot a black who yelled “honkie” as they crawled through a broken window, unarmed. When any ONE of the cops there could have... could have TASED the intruder. Deadly force has been what this idiot has been wanting to do all his life. A very stupid person— of ANY color.
I really felt as though he looked like a dullard.
You beat me too it!
so when something happens to him , he will be a martyr ..
No, he did it, alright. Apparently some of the officers on the scene talked to the press on Jan 6 or 7, and all the details about the murder were published at that time, including who it was. The stories disappeared very soon as the media went into cover-up mode.
Not really. The Capitol Police are managed by the Capitol Police Board.
But, the murder maybe a horse of a different color.
Not really. The Supreme Court ruled years ago that police officers enjoy limited liability from lawsuits when they're performing their duty.
Can Congress and Pelosi be sued?
Interesting question but I suspect not. Otherwise Congress would be snowed under by millions of lawsuits a year.
Also if you are from Oklahoma, would you all get rid of the GOP asshat that called this racist killer a hero.
I'm from Missouri. I don't think any of my GOP asshats have weighed in.
Tucker also stated that the officer did not holler out warnings, even though he says he did. This is important. There are tapes. And, he was surrounded by people who know. And, if he saw Ashley Babbitt, he must have seen the security around her, even closer to her than he was.
"Like with Breonna Taylor?"
You really want to go there?
Ok.
The no-knock warrant was converted to knock-and-announce at the squad meeting that evening.
The 3 police knocked-and-announced. Repeatedly.
Having overheard the commotion, old black man upstairs ran out on the stair landing and told them to be leavin' that girl alone.
That's how the grand jury knew the 3 had knocked-and-announced, thus eliminating Castle Doctrine
Mattingly was first through the door. Walker shot Mattingly in the leg and nearly killed him.
Cosgrove physically yanked Mattingly out of the way and fired back, killing St. Bre, as the cowardly Walker dived out of the way.
When questioned, Walker blamed St. Bre for firing the shot.
Cameron handled the grand jury masterfully.
St. Bre's momma walked away with 12M in taxpayer monies.
Case closed. Until Mattingly publishes "The Fight For Truth: The Inside Story Behind the Breonna Taylor Tragedy." I'll sit on that thread and LOL at posts like yours til the cows come home.
Had to - Book Deal.
The payout to the Babbitt family needs to come from the salaries and pensions of Capitol Police members, not the taxpayers.
He came out to help Pelosi’s house investigation. She thinks this will save them in 2022
Why not? Both victims were unarmed. Both were present where a crime was being committed. Both could be considered to be committing a criminal action when shot. Neither was a threat to the officer doing the shooting or anyone else when they were shot. Both shootings were ruled to be justified.
