Nearly two dozen California students and parents are among the thousands currently stranded in Afghanistan after taking a summer trip to visit family.
Twenty-three students from the Cajon Valley Union School District, just outside San Diego, are stuck in Kabul with their parents after traveling to the war-torn country, the LA Times reports.
They are trying to make their way to the airport or board one of the US military flights out of Kabul before the Aug. 31 deadline to withdraw US troops arrives.
It was not immediately clear when the families arrived in Afghanistan, but Cajon Valley Superintendent David Miyashiro said they had traveled there on special visas for US military service.
They had gone to the country to visit their extended relatives, including their grandparents.
It was not a school-sanctioned trip, according to the district
The families had return flights to the US so they could be back for the start of the school year.
Some of the families were on their way to the airport in Kabul when chaos erupted as the Taliban seized control of the city, according to the district.

May they get home to CA safely.
I’m waiting for the real story since no one in their right mind would allow their child to vacation in Afghanistan.
They were from Afghanistan. But, yes, pretty foolish.
They should stay in Aftrashastan. If they were grateful to be allowed into America, they would not be traveling into a war zone. Any “refugee” who vacations in the “old country” is prima facie not a refugee.
“ I’m waiting for the real story since no one in their right mind would allow their child to vacation in Afghanistan.”
I agree…….but Liberal Peaceniks are a diluted bunch.
They were actually US Afghan students visiting their families.
Hey kids, planning a family vacation - who wants to goto the beach and who wants to goto Afghanistan instead??
These are family members, parents and children. This is not a school trip.
The grandparents live there.
We’re they visiting Disney Kabul?
When I was a student I went to Ocean City, Md. Worse thing to happen to me was drinking too much and passing out on the beach. Oh, and I got a wicked sunburn.
That’s the ONLY way taking a Summer Vacation in Kabul would make any sense at all. Even then, you must have known you were dancing on a tightrope stepping into that country.
Back then, no Taliban, al Qaeda and ISIS on the beach in MD.
But I will never intentionally go to MD.
They would probably arrest me.
how does one come to the conclusion that going to a war zone is a good idea for a summer trip?
Read the article.
So these are American grade school students visiting their parents, who are still living in Afghanistan?
Idiots all of them
"Last night, a two star 82nd general, ordered 100 US Christian workers, along with 300 children, he ordered them off the airport grounds to wait for their charter flight which was to leave out today."
Were they the ones holed up by that hotel/school that was subject to a suicide bomb?
“I’m waiting for the real story since no one in their right mind would allow their child to vacation in Afghanistan.”
Reminiscent of Otto Warmbier’s trip to North Korea.
You beat me to it. This is why I miss my parents so much; they wouldn’t let me do stupid crap like vacationing to Afghanistan or, ya know, crossing the border into North Korea. They were just weird that way.
