An End to the Special Relationship?

A major consequence of the turmoil in Afghanistan today caused by the refusal of President Joe Biden to alter his unilateral timetable to exit Kabul, is that it increased the damage inflicted on allies and friends, and has led the possible demise of the “special relationship” between the UK and the U.S., which projected power and influence in securing a cohesive Western approach in the world. In these circumstances, it is pertinent to ask. “Is the special relationship fact or fiction?” The term was coined by Winston Churchill in his “Iron Curtain” speech at Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri on March 5, 1946, eager to maintain the relationship of close allies in World War II. The concept was that the level of cooperation between the two countries in trade, commerce, military affairs, intelligence sharing, is unparalleled among world powers.

The special relationship has always been uneven. At times, relations between leaders of the two countries have appeared close: Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan rode horses together and danced in the White House. and there appeared to be cordial rapport between Tony Blair and Bill Clinton. But there were always American skeptics of the meaningfulness of the relationship, even before Churchill’s speech. Dean Acheson was caustic, “Britain has lost an empire and has not yet found a role.” The two countries differed over issues, such as the Arab-Israeli war in 1973, over the issue of a nuclear alert, and over British policy in Northern Ireland. President Barack Obama declared in April 2016 that the UK would be at the “back of the queue” in any U.S. trade deal if Brexit took place.

Seems to me the Gen Milley vanillie and/or some of the top brass would have the insight to destroy a lot of that equipment without waiting for orders from a senile old man.

I was going to post the same thing. Biden did not kill the “special relationship” the UK did.

They did not like that Trump because he did not play the game so they helped defeat him. To the UK and all of Europe I really hope you enjoy the world you have created where you will soon be ruled by Muslims.

Oh, don’t call for the US to help because we will be too busy fighting terrorist in our nation as well (with a woke military I am no longer sure how that will end).

When the British Parliament excoriates the President of the United States there is no conclusion to draw but that the "special relationship" has been ruptured, perhaps permanently. This development is worse than regrettable, it is catastrophic.

It is representative of the breakdown of alliances around the world precipitated by Bug Out Biden's blunder in Afghanistan where he failed to even apprise our allies, including Britain, of his great skedaddle.

However, it appears that the American relationship with NATO and Europe in general has been on a course for rupture for some time and probably that relationship was due for an overhaul of the kind of Donald Trump was trying to effect before he was defrauded of his office. The reality is that immigration was due to cause a major realignment and redefinition of interests of America and European countries, even including Britain. The arc of unchecked immigration into America and the flood of immigrants into Europe were so changing the politics, economies and culture of these countries as to make a realignment inevitable.

All those ties that bound the United States to Britain, language, law, a sense of decency, a respect for democracy, and Anglo-Saxon heritage are all being overwhelmed by a suicidal wave of home generated immigration. Those ties had been worked around by the governing class in both countries until the American governing class surrendered to Marxism. Even when the leftists controlled Britain their dependence on America for security forced British policy to align itself with its protector. No such constraint now guides the Biden administration.

One might see Brexit as a last ditch effort to align Britain away from the forces of immigration and Europe toward a restoration of a special relationship with America. Brexit was born as a reaction to unchecked immigration but it is immigration in America that deals the deathblow.
