Delta Air Lines is raising health insurance premiums for unvaccinated employees by $200 a month to cover higher Covid costs
CNBC ^ | Augustine 25, 2021 | Leslie Josephs

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian notified employees Wednesday that they will face $200 monthly increases on their health insurance premiums starting Nov. 1 if they aren't vaccinated against Covid-19, citing steep costs to cover employees who are hospitalized with the virus.

Unvaccinated employees will face other restrictions, including indoor masking effective immediately and weekly Covid-19 tests starting Sept. 12 the Atlanta-based airline said in announcing new Covid policies for employees.

The measures are the latest attempt by a U.S. corporation to drive up Covid vaccination rates. Delta stopped short of an outright mandate like rival United Airlines established earlier this month. The airline, which self insures its employees, stands out in its plans to raise premiums for unvaccinated workers to cover the higher costs of insuring employees who get Covid.

"The average hospital stay for COVID-19 has cost Delta $40,000 per person," Bastian said in an employee memo. "This surcharge will be necessary to address the financial risk the decision to not vaccinate is creating for our company. In recent weeks since the rise of the B.1.617.2 variant, all Delta employees who have been hospitalized with COVID were not fully vaccinated."

"You are aware we're talking about a corporation and not the government? Shouldn't something like this be a matter for the corporation decide? Or would you have the government mandate how they will handle their benefits package for their employees?"

OK Mr. Chamber of Commerce. Corporations ran the slave trade and with your facile reasoning they should be able to do the same thing today, right? I am waiting with bated breath for you to post back with something in and like "As long as the practice of slavery is properly codified in the corporation's HR policies slavery is just good business!"

I would demand to see the numbers...

This sounds arbitrary and capricious

I agree with you on that. So the unvaxxed employee who maybe is naturally immune will end up paying for the vaxxed who actually gets sick. I don't think they any real numbers to back this up.

You pay higher rates if you smoke. I don’t see the issue.

First of all, Smoking is a "positive act" - something you choose to engage in.

Secondly, the Federal Government, over the last 30 years, has written the ADA to very clearly include transmissive diseases like HIV, TB, STDs, etc... The Leftist central planners clearly were thinking about their own social causes, but as such, they had to write the law with language which would clearly include COVID.

ADA.GOV

Also, its a basic legal concept that you may not discriminate against someone "ex ante" because they may cause a problem in the future

Also, what will Delta's response be when it turns out that 80% or more of the employees receiving higher insurance premiums are black?

"obese"

Ditto obesity for commiecare and employers. Premiums and discrimination allowed.

Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with this type of discrimination. I'm pointing out the hypocrisy of accepting one form of discrimination (for smokers) but not the other (for covid).

What if you’re naturally immune, i.e., had the virus and recovered?

In total agreement and this is opening up a can of worms that will spiral out of control if this unvaccinated insurance surcharge becomes reality.

Some companies already charge higher premiums for smokers. This isn't any different.

Decades of evidence shows that smoking raises the risk of various types of cancer. There is no evidence that new experimental vaccine prevents COVID.

Do you pay higher rates if you are a homo?

Do you pay higher rates if you are all vaxxed up and still get and pass covid?

What the heck is wrong with you?

What about promiscuity of male/male sex? Or “sex change” treatment? Those are extremely expensive health care costs risks

You are correct.

Homosexual men are the biggest drain on the system.

Parents of small children in general are a drain and not just from medical insurance.

Your best employee is a normal between late 40-60. Smoking is actually irrelevant. Smoking costs do not show up until late 60s usually. By which time they are on Medicare.

I am wondering if the insurance companies will soon start to notice a spike in claimes paid out to the “vaccinated”?

It's the conservative thing to do.

It would be if they didn't single out CoupFlu vaxx status for special treatment.
