At the center of the scramble to airlift American citizens out of Afghanistan after its fall to the Taliban is a simple question: How many Americans are waiting to be evacuated?
It is a question the Biden administration has been unable to answer.
“We cannot give you a precise number,” Jake Sullivan, President Biden’s national security adviser, said on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.

Mr. Sullivan said the United States had been in touch with a “few thousand Americans” and was working on making arrangements to get them out of the country. In another interview, on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” he estimated that “roughly a few thousand” Americans were trying to leave Afghanistan.
American officials had estimated on Tuesday that 10,000 to 15,000 U.S. citizens were in Afghanistan. Maj. Gen. William Taylor of the Pentagon’s Joint Staff said on Saturday that about 2,500 Americans had been evacuated since Aug. 14, the day before the Taliban took Kabul, the Afghan capital.
The evacuation of American citizens is one piece of the broader airlift effort that is underway in Kabul, with thousands of Afghans also being flown out of the country. The White House said on Sunday that about 25,000 people, in total, had been evacuated on military and other flights since Aug. 14.
Complicating matters for the Biden administration is a lack of clarity about how many Americans were in Afghanistan when the Taliban seized control of the country.

Say, don’t a lot of those Americans in Afghanistan work for the State dept? Well the State dept. is very liberal and a lot of them voted for Biden. Hell of thing to find out your life is on the line because you’ve been scammed.
That is a ridiculous statement! The military knows who they have, and the state department knows who the civilians are and where they are staying. Every civilian checks in at the Embassy and signs in - - they know!
Of course, some may have “slipped out” in the rush, but these should be easy to run down also.

I’m not surprised as I don’t believe that US citizens traveling to Afghanistan were REQUIRED to register with the US embassy. At best, we would know the number of people there who were on official government business.
Ohhh, they vacated the Embassy and shredded the records (or left them behind).
At this point what difference does it make?

The USA was very slow to catch on, but in modern times passports have digital data. The US bought and paid for everything the Kabul puppet regime has and did. The US State Dept damn well knew in almost real time whenever American citizens entered or departed Afghanistan. During the current crisis, a few might have jumped the border into Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, etc., but the rest, we ought to know.
I guess Blinken & Sullivan rely on being such macho men since they obvious aren’t getting by on their brains...

Nope. That’s what American Citizen Services (ACS) is for. ACS registration is voluntary so unless the former Afghan Gov’t’s entry records can be found, combed through and compared with exits, no one knows how many Americans outside of State, military and their contractor personnel could be there. Anyone visiting a country can register online with that country’s US Embassy ACS. Kabul ACS records are probably gone but if they’re anywhere now, they were either backed up to DC before the evacuation and/or they’re at the airport at the makeshift US Embassy.

Of course they know. Anyone who has recently traveled overseas gets to see a LIST OF COUNTRIES that they visited, when at the Passport Control, upon returning home.

How would they know? People don’t check in with the embassy when they enter a foreign country.
