DAVENPORT, Fla. — By June, Meli Feliciano’s family appeared to have finally found a measure of stability after being jolted by the economic devastation of the coronavirus pandemic. Her husband had secured a good job in construction, and she was receiving hundreds of dollars in weekly federal and state unemployment aid, giving her some breathing room while she submitted job applications each week. She kept records of it all in a pink binder that her daughter had once used in kindergarten.
That’s when calamity struck.
Her husband fell ill, temporarily wiping out his income. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) slashed her jobless aid by more than half to $197 per week, arguing that the federal boost to unemployment insurance was keeping people like Feliciano from getting back to work. The bill for her daughter’s college tuition and textbooks is due soon, nearly $1,000 that the family doesn’t have. And just as her husband was cleared to go back to work in August, her stepson Julian tested positive for the coronavirus, requiring the household to isolate for two weeks.
Last year, when their jobless aid briefly lapsed, the couple sold one of their cars to get by. But now they are running out of options. Do they draw further on the generosity of neighbors? Sacrifice tuition? Delay paying rent as long as possible?
“When you’re stressed as a parent, you don’t want it to show, but sometimes it shows,” said Feliciano, 42. “It’s a different issue going on every day. You just take it day by day and do the best you can.”

ZFG. Move back to whatever craphole you or your family are from. Or move to cuba for the ‘free’ medical care.
Snort, got that pink folder beat. I passed my 1960s 4th grade crayons down to our kids and there are still plenty. She’s lucky to have a pink folder. All we had back then were blue, red, green and yellow.
Instead of whining, she should have been looking for a job months ago instead of relying on the kindness of strangers’ tax dollars.
Biden sent thousands of Covid infected illegals to Florida and DeSantis did not stop it. Texas, Alabama and Florida are states the Dems want to turn blue.
My neighbor’s fully vaccinated, 35 yr old son, who lives in her attic and hates work like poison but had to go back to work because his mother forced him too, announced that he had tested positive for Covid and wasn’t feeling good so he was going to retire to his room. He called in to his job and told them he’d be out for 2 weeks, his mother is bringing him food, etc. Prior to this he’d been collecting unemployment.
I suggested they go to the Regeneron stations that DeSantis has set up, mentioning that the treatment had to be early, within the first 10 or so days of symptoms and before serious respiratory problems, and she said, “oh, no, he’s too far gone.”
I thought this meant that he had some sort of high-speed infection that had immediately gone to his lungs and he was at death’s door, so I asked how bad his symptoms were. She said, “oh, you know, he thinks his skin feels hot. He thinks he has a fever.”
I’m sure he’s annoyed about not getting the fat checks he probably imagined...and I think he’s probably pretty typical of a lot of people who were getting them.
There are places that would hire her on the spot, no one csn be without work in this labor environment. It’s a lie or scam or both
Monoclonal antibody treatment - it's the same treatment Trump got and all the reports on it are wonderful...
The catch? You've got to go in for the treatment early. So call your doctor (for your friend) and - find out where you can be tested. My doctor offers testing but not in her office. She sends someone out to the car to do the test - then you know and can go to step two: a DeSantis treatment site (free) or the local hospital...(which I don't know if it's free - should be since it's in that 'public heath' area...who knows? I'll try to find out.
My insurance is great - haven't paid a dime for medical care in years... so I would go to the hospital for the monoclonal antibody treatments because it's closer.
“Terrify” THIS.
She may have been looking for jobs, but how many other people were NOT, due to the extra jobless stipend.
But not to worry (for her): I’m sure Florida’s version of the Union of Unemployed Workers — yes, Maryland has such a thing — will sue for reinstatement of the benefits before a friendly judge.
They really shouldn’t be talking about Devo and The Bangles like that.
That figures. Maybe they can all stay at Marco Rubio’s house.
“The bill for her daughter’s college tuition and textbooks is due soon, nearly $1,000 that the family doesn’t have.”
Daughter needs to get a part-time job.
He is no one I am voting for. Just got his third booster shot for covid so he jumped the line big-time for his first set.
the media in Orlando, Tampa, West Palm and Miami are all on the “eeeevil DeSantis” train.
the terrifying new wave!!!!!!!! run for your lives. Money stopped???? and we all have to go out and work??????
No terror in my suburban florida hood. My neighbors are partying like it’s 1929.
LOL...the Eighties references!
So terrifying. /s
I won’t downplay Covid’s seriousness; I lost family to it. But the absolute piece of garbage who governs my state (Virginia) would be happy to pay people to sit in their blanket forts forever. Let people do what they need to do, get vaxed or not, wear masks or not. It’s up to them. But DeSantis is right. Businesses are suffering because people don’t have to leave home for a paycheck and it’s way past time to stop.
People die of the flu every year.

Problem is it has now moved into the realm of “never let a crisis go to waste.”
The only people terrified are the lazy welfare frauds who have to get back to work and off the gravy train.
