One officer critical, three others injured in NE ABQ shooting

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Three officers were shot and another was injured by shrapnel or glass in Northeast Albuquerque on Thursday morning, setting off a manhunt.

One was shot in the upper chest and is in critical condition. That officer is in surgery. A second officer was shot in the arm and a third in the vest.

The families of all officers involved have been notified.

A manhunt is underway for one suspect as tactical officers in full gear sweep nearby neighborhoods. Another suspect is in custody.

Rebecca Atkins, an Albuquerque Police Department spokesperson, said the agency would not be responding to any non-emergency calls while the incident is being investigated.

The situation unfolded near the Federico’s Mexican Food restaurant on the 1100 block of Juan Tabo.

Officers were responding to a call of a robbery of a person at Dutch Bros. One of the suspects was shot on scene, but that individual’s condition was not immediately released.

Leighanne Begay and Garrett Bradley said they pulled up to Dutch Bros Coffee as police converged on the area.

Bradley said they saw a body under a white sheet being lifted by first responders and police into a waiting ambulance.

A police helicopter, small plane and drone circled a neighborhood to the west and officers in an armed vehicle could be seen driving fast into the neighborhood.

An officer with an assault rifle hung out of a top hatch of the vehicle.

Albuquerque continues as one of the most crime ridden Democratic run cities. The city last week passed the yearly record number of homicides for any year with over 80 and with still four months left in the calendar year.

Is there gang activity in ABQ? I’ve been through there a few times, and most of it struck me as pretty tranquil.

Of course, I live in Jacksonville, Fl, where everything is great - except for one part of town, which gives us one of the highest murder rates in the country.

Absolutely true. Albuquerque is a rough town for sure. The local LE have called a particularly bad section of the city the war zone for good reason.

And our city leadership keeps telling the public that the crime rate is going down. What is happening is they are playing games with the data, claiming that because the police have stopped responding to “lesser” crimes and therefore fewer arrests that that translates to lower crime. Our crime is, in fact, becoming more violent.

Isn’t northeast Albuquerque an upscale residential section?

Man that is some crappy writing. Armed vehicle? Armored vehicle? Hanging out of a top hatch? That is a strange phenomenon.

Yep. I loved Jacksonville. Hope to move back there to retire.

Just stay out of the 32209 zip code and you'll be fine. No reason to go there anyways.

It's not the southeast ABQ high crime area whose nickname the "war zone" was changed by city leaders to the "international zone" in an attempt to downplay the crime, gangs, drugs and prostitution that goes on there. But criminals are mobile and this sounded like an early morning robbery/hijacking that went wrong. Also, in the NE part of the city there are many apartment complexes and condos that can attract the wrong type of resident. There are crime maps and incidents occur in all parts of the city.

KRQE 13 has a news conference at the below link. One of the participants was Raul Torrez, Bernalillo County DA. He is a Soros elected DA and the chances are good that the suspects have a criminal record and released on their own without bail. One suspect was wounded (no status given) and another has been captured. There are several others who have been detained.

This was at Juan Tabo and Constitution, mostly strip malls and businesses like restaurants and tire centers until you get a few blocks off the main streets, then it’s ok residential areas. This was not a “problem” area, unless you consider that anywhere in ABQ these days can have crap happen.
